| | Freaks Just A Boy CD - Import Freaks Discography of CDs
Between pop songs with the electronic keys and throbbing rock'n'roll releases, the album reveals an obvious maturity in the compositions, the texts and a singular and exacerbated sensitivity. Just A Boy is a superb album of pop music carried out with desire and perseverance by a man rocked by the sound of the 80's. Influences from Morrissey for the voice and Johnny Marr for the guitars. | | Fabulous Wailers CD (1959)
Just A Boy CD music
$12.59 As any quick perusal of old Top 40 rock & roll station playlists will attest, singles were where the shakin' action was, as rock & roll albums were scarce as hen's teeth back in those pre-Beatle days. But when the record companies decided to issue one, it was usually an artifact of high rockin' value and some major influence. Naysayers to the contrary, this debut album by the Northwest's first great rock & roll combo is just such an artifact. The Wailers dispensed crude, greasy, largely instrumental rock & roll music for those who came to shake it up and shake it down, and it's all on fine, rhythmic, open display here. This album is amazing in its own simplistic, nuthin'-special way, its crudity almost palpable. There's only one vocal aboard, Kent Morrill's "Dirty Robber," later covered and torched by the Sonics. Everything else is built on the riff-sturdy bones of their biggest hit, "Tall Cool One." With two guitars, piano, sax, and drums -- no bass player anywhere on here, another crudeness indicator of the times and locale it was recorded in -- all blasting away like they're working a VFW Hall dance, hoof shakers like "Wailin'," "Shanghaied," "Beat Guitar" (featured in the soundtrack of the misguided Jerry Lee Lewis bioflick Great Balls Of Fire), and "Gunnin' For Peter" stand loud and proud as teen hall pre-Beatle ...

| | Magnolia Electric Co What Comes After The Blues CD (2005)
Just A Boy album
$10.49 Following quickly from the live Trials & Errors is What Comes After the Blues, the studio debut of Jason Molina's Magnolia Electric Co. And what comes after that comparatively boisterous live set is a record of quiet fire, fueled by an electric/acoustic guitar dynamic and the determined waver in Molina's vocals, which have strengthened considerably since Songs: Ohia. Strengthened yes, but Molina hasn't lost that melancholy tinge. On What Comes After he's a man resigned to what he must do, yet unable to remove from his voice a wavering mix of fear, anger, and regret. "Now the world was empty on the day when they made it," he sings over the ramble of opener "Dark Don't Hide It." "And heaven needed some place to throw all the sh*t." But as down as he is on human darkness, the track softens at the touch of harmonies from Jennie Benford of Jim & Jennie & the Pinetops. (Benford takes the lead for the weary folk lament "Night Shift Lullaby.") "Leave the City" is his goodbye to Chicago, his adopted home and, with Steve Albini, where the album was recorded. A winnowing trumpet joins its shuffling country-rock rhythm, and Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" drifts in the margins of Molina's bittersweet self-examination. The full band really makes its mark on "Hard to Love a Man," where Wurlitzer, violin, and the bass' deliberate ...

| | Sin Bandera Manana CD (2005) DualDisc
Just A Boy music CDs
$16.35 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Two frontmen with boatloads of star potential. Two mega-producers in the booth. Two hugely successful records to their credit. With the fates conspiring, Manana had really only one way to go. In the Latin pop world, this release definitely takes more to the pop side, less the Latin. To the naked ear, the only thing Latino about this record is the language. That said, one knows that anything touched by contributor Brian McKnight turns to gold. The same goes for arranger Bill Meyers, with a credits list that reads like a who's who in pop music from the mid-'70s on up. From the sensitive balladry that made Sin Bandera famous, like "Suelta Mi Mano" or "Tocame," to the block-rocking loops on "Junto a Ti" and "No, No," this disc was obviously made with radio playability in mind from the beginning. With an unforgettable hook in just about every track, they hit their mark. Occasionally the production ...
