| | Retro: Active 4 CD
The fourth excellent volume of this series of treasure troves for 80's aficionados. Includes rare 12" mixes that collectors absolutely must have for themselves, like Orchestral Manoevres In The Dark-Secret, Blancmange-Livng On The Ceiling, The Cure-In Between Days, The Smiths-This Charming Man, Tin Tin-Hold It and many more greats!
The extended version of the Cure's "In Between Days," the 12" mix of Blancmange's "Living on the Ceiling," one of François Kevorkian's many mixes of the Smiths' "This Charming Man," and the 12" mix of Underworld's "Underneath the Radar" highlight the fourth volume of Hi-Bias' Retro: Active series. Several tracks in the series have been either tough to find or impossible to obtain on CD, so the label is -- in a sense -- plugging a few gaps, rather than recycling the same versions of the same songs that you can find on dozens of thoughtless compilations. Ten of this volume's 12 tracks were previously unavailable on CD. ~ Andy Kellman

Retro: Active 4
$15.59 Spectrum Music, the British reissue division of PolyGram Records, had only four Liza Minnelli albums to draw upon in assembling its compilation, The Collection. Those albums -- Liza Minnelli (1968), Come Saturday Morning (1970), New Feelin' (1970), and Live at the Olympia in Paris (1972) -- cover Minnelli's tenure at A&M Records, since acquired by PolyGram, and they constitute only a narrow slice of the catalog of an artist who worked for Capitol Records earlier and Columbia Records, among others, later. They also mark a somewhat troubled time in Minnelli's recording career. Born in 1946, she was only 22 in 1968, but her musical sensibility derived from before the rock era, and she tended to make records similar to those of artists 20 or 30 years her senior. Like the LPs of those middle-of-the-road pop singers, hers were not selling by the late '60s, and A&M at first took the same tack that other labels saddled with such artists did, requiring her to record then-current soft rock hits like "The Look of Love," "Leavin' on a Jet Plane," and "MacArthur ...

$16.85 For Sandy Denny fans, anything involving her is worthwhile, and fewer and fewer scraps turn up. This, however, found as Woodworm Studios was being cleared, is a lo-fi gem. Recorded at a gig in 1975, it presents Denny in wonderful form, with Fairport on tour after releasing Rising for the Moon (a vastly underappreciated disc). There's plenty of the familiar in the set, be they Fairport songs or Denny originals, and the band is in good form, dashing around curves just prior to falling apart -- which would come not long after. The sound is bootleg quality, but the performance more than makes up for that. There's a passion to Denny's voice that the studio never captured, and a sense of the blood being up, with a new drummer (Bruce Rowland) and Jerry Donahue wringing amazing passages from his guitar -- he's especially good on "Sloth." But newer and vintage material is equally fiery, with "One More Chance" ...
