Hane-Kun Soundtrack album
$14.95 Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, the Broadway musical WICKED creates a history for the two witches from L. Frank Baum's OZ books. Through composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz's emotive songs, the show reveals the unlikely friendship between Elphaba (Idina Menzel), who eventually becomes the Wicked Witch, and Glinda (Kristin Chenoweth), the Good Witch.
The dramatic, horn-laden "No One Mourns the Wicked" starts the story in striking fashion, with the death of the ruby-slipper-wearing Wicked Witch. As Glinda appears, Elphaba's backstory begins, leading to jaunty numbers like "Popular" and "Defying Gravity," as well as ballads such as "I'm Not That Girl" and "For Good," with Menzel and Chenoweth showing ...

As modern soundtrack scores go, the quality can be hit or miss, but Thomas Newman's work is almost always something to get excited about, as evidenced in the Oscar-nominated The Shawshank Redemption, Road to Perdition, and the title theme for Six Feet Under. His score for Meet Joe Black contains the seeds of beauty that would fully flower on his score for American Beauty, the next film he scored and a high point of his career. "Whisper of a Thrill," the soaring romantic theme, is a perfect distillation of the film's emotional plot, its yearning melody shadowing Joe Black's (Brad Pitt) love for the beautiful Susan (played by Claire Forlani) and its ultimate futility. As romantic themes go, Newman's ranks as a recent classic that captures both the initial rush of love and also the devastating crush of its leaving. Newman skillfully weaves this theme into the rest of the ...

| | Grease CD (1994) Original Broadway Cast
Hane-Kun Soundtrack music CDs
$9.99 All songs written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, except "Since I Don't Have You" (Joseph Rock/James Beaumont/The Skyliners).
For this Broadway revival of the 1972 show, Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey's score has been reorchestrated and a genuine oldie has been added, The Skyliners' "Since I Don't Have You." But Grease! is still the same shallow pastiche of 1950s high school references, still unsure whether it wants to celebrate or satirize. The new cast sings with gusto (including star Rosie O'Donnell, who is more comedienne than vocalist), but this still isn't much of a show. ~ William Ruhlmann
Grease is one of the classic musicals that the majority of the public associates with the movie incarnation, although there are plenty of stage versions that are just as well done, if not better. The stage musical often has different songs than the movie adaptation, and different plot twists. Grease opened originally in 1972, starring Carole Demas and Barry Bostwick (of Rocky Horror Picture Show fame). Sandy Dumbrowski (or Sandra D.) and Danny Zuko have a summer romance; however, when they run into each other at school, they find they are socially incompatible. She attempts to change herself to suit him, he changes himself to suit her, but finally her alteration works and everybody's happy. Grease has famous songs like "Greased Lightnin, '" "It's Raining on Prom Night" and "We Go Together" -- although the most famous songs from the movie ("Summer Nights" and "You're the One that I Want") were written specifically for the screen version. The 1994 Broadway revival starred ...
