Purchase Nanboo! CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Diana Krall Quiet Nights CD (2009)
Nanboo! album
$13.09 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title ...

Nanboo! album
$9.89 How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found ...

| | Duke Ellington Live at Carnegie Hall, December 11, 1943 (Storyville) CDs (2002) (Import) Denmark
Nanboo! album
$44.69 Between 1943 and 1948, Duke Ellington & His Orchestra typically made one or more annual trips to perform at Carnegie Hall. His second performance of December 11, 1943, is not historically equal to the January concert, which marked the debut of his complete tone poem "Black, Brown & Beige" (played complete on only one other occasion a few days later in Boston), though the sound on this two-CD set fares better than the somewhat deteriorated source material for the first Carnegie Hall concert. The music is a mix of both old and new songs from the Ellington songbook, popular ...
| | Eric Marienthal Sweet Talk CD (2003)
Nanboo! CD music
$10.39 Eric Marienthal is a technically skilled altoist with a soulful tone and an appealing style. Unfortunately, many of his recordings are strictly for the commercial market, such as Sweet Talk. Marienthal's solos are full of spirit and color but the backup groups, which often include keyboardist Jeff Lorber along with occasional vocalists, are mundane and lack much personality. The same can be said for the set of originals, including a song apiece from Stevie Wonder and Ivan Lins. Marienthal, who was brilliant on his 1990 release Crossroads and is at his best when playing with Chick Corea's Elektric Band, mostly sounds like he is coasting on Sweet Talk, making this an OK but forgettable release. ~ Scott Yanow
Gene Lake, Chris Parker (drums); Marc Quinones (congas, percussion).
Personnel: Eric Marienthal (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Melvin Davis (vocals, drum programming); Ivan Lins, Cassandra Reed (vocals); ...
| | Lovethugs Playground Instructors CD (2003)
Nanboo! music CDs
$13.85 The Lovethugs hail from Oslo, Norway. Playground Instructors is their debut for Rainbow Quartz. Neo-psychedelic guitar rock is their game. They play it OK, creating a heady mix of twisting guitar lines, trippy atmospheres, and funky rhythms. Having a full-time percussionist certainly helps in this last regard. The best songs are those with the most straightforward structure, like "You Are My Bird," "A Little Bit of Something," and "Bringing It Down." When the band indulges in freer formats (like on "What's the Season" or "Playground Instructor"), ...
| | Very Best Of The Human League CD (2005) Remastered
Nanboo! songs
$11.49 Not to be confused with the 2005 Caroline compilation of the same name, 1998's THE VERY BEST OF HUMAN LEAGUE (released on the Ark 21 label) offers a non-chronological overview of the refined British synth-pop act, ranging from 1978's moody "Being Boiled" to '95's sunny "One Man in My Heart." In between, of course, are the ensemble's biggest '80s hits, including the buoyant "Don't You Want Me" and the playful "(Keep Feeling) Fascination," which showcase the deep croon of singer Philip Oakey and the vibrant backing vocals of Susanne Sulley and Joanne Catherall. The disc also includes one of Oakey's mid-'80s songs with disco guru Giorgio Moroder, the surging "Together in Electric Dreams," which was recorded while the group was on hiatus. Although the later Caroline collection does feature more tracks (including many presented here), this anthology is ideal for those seeking a concise introduction to Human League or fans wanting to bypass the band's post-'90s material.
THE VERY BEST OF THE HUMAN LEAGUE is an excellent and rather generous compilation. ...
| | Sails CD (2006)
Nanboo! album
$12.65 The eponymous debut album from the Sails is so thoroughly drizzled with gooey power pop confection that your teeth may ache by the end of it. But everyone loves a good sugar buzz, and this U.K. quintet delivers the glucose-laden goods. Lead singer/songwriter Michael Gagliano is clearly enamored with all things Beatles and Byrds, circa 1965 and 1966, and if the end results are highly derivative (and they are), he at least has the good sense to imitate some of the most glorious pop music ever recorded. "Chocolate" and "Peter Shilton" feature letter-perfect "Ticket to Ride" jangly guitar lines and harmony-drenched singalong choruses, while "Can You Hear Me" recaptures the magic of "Rain," backwards tape loops and all. Even the band's lightweight lyrics encapsulate the era in microcosm, and hark back to a time when countless British Invasion groups could ride their chiming guitars and "stay" and "away" rhymes right to the top of the charts. It's a classic sound, but one that ...
