If it doesn't wind up signaling the very end of Antimatter, Planetary Confinement will, at the very least, close a chapter in the fruitful partnership between core members and songwriters Mick Moss and Duncan Patterson, the latter of whom announced his departure shortly after their third album's release in 2005. Tellingly, the duo never actually collaborated on these recordings, rather going about their sessions at separate dates and locations, and with entirely different casts of supporting musicians, then simply intercalating them for the final album release. That they ultimately mesh quite nicely even so is of little comfort pending further clarification about the band's future, but given the circumstances, it's worth noting that Antimatter's "gray album" (their previous two outings being characterized by distinctly near-full-white and black cover artworks) loses little in the way of overall quality. Both men continue to write songs of striking, economical beauty, though Moss tracks like "The Weight of the World" and "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" rely almost exclusively on chillingly stark and circular acoustic guitar figures (occasionally spiced with violins), while Patterson's delve in rather more varied (see the organs used in "Relapse") and often ambiently electronic sounds, particularly in the instrumental pair opening and closing the LP. What common ground does survive between the two parties is most evident in their lingering use of female vocals, though former collaborators Michelle Richfield and Hayley Windsor have also sadly been jettisoned from their midst. Here, they've been replaced by one Sue Marshall for Moss's best offering, the quite stunning "Legions," and Amélie Festa for all of Patterson's vocal offerings, which include the aforementioned "Relapse," the wonderfully melancholy "Line of Fire," and maybe best of all, a creepy-cool cover of the Trouble nugget "Mr. White," totally reinvented for these sparse surroundings. After that, all that's left to observe is that Planetary Confinement continues Antimatter's gradual replacement of synthetic music styles (electronic, techno, dub) with far more organic instrumental approach -- making for a fittingly somber finale should the band really be over. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Antimatter moves toward richer, more organic textures with Planetary Confinement. Forsaking the electronic elements found on Saviour and Lights Out, natural string, piano and drum sounds form the foundation, with beautiful melancholy vocalizations provided by male and female vocalists. Recorded in two sessions, one in Ireland directed by Duncan Patterson (ex-Anathema), the other in England by Mick Moss. Features a contemplative, morose and quite liberal interpretation of Trouble's 'Mr. White'. For fans of Portishead, Massive Attack, Pink Floyd and anyone that feels the weight on the world on their shoulders. Proph. 2005.

Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, too. The very occasional interruption of male death growls is less necessary; frankly, ...

Five Finger Death Punch War Is The Answer CD  (2009)

Planetary Confinement
CD $11.59  5 stars Top 100 Audio Samples
Five Finger Death Punch stormed rock radio in 2007 with "The Bleeding" (from debut album THE WAY OF THE FIST), a powerful, emotionally tense track that matched vintage, Metallica-style thrash with a throat-shredding chorus more typical of late aughts metalcore. The Los Angeles-based band's sophomore disc WAR IS THE ANSWER mines much of the same territory as that breakout song, keeping the flame of the classic `80s Four Horsemen sound alive with snap-tight chugga-chugga guitar rhythms, minor-key, classical music-inspired clean/acoustic passages, and vocals dripping with a James Hetfield-approved combination of sensitive angst and macho defiance. First single "Hard to See" backs a catchy, harmony-vocal laden melody with a syncopated groove so rhythmically engaging it could almost be called funky, while the closing track "War is the Answer" takes a classic-sounding headbanging riff seemingly straight out of the Anthrax songbook and uses it to drive home one of several ultra-aggressive sentiments ("to me you're just a cancer/war is the answer"). Elsewhere, Five Finger Death Punch delves into somewhat more diverse sonic territory; "Bulletproof" combines a throbbing industrial feel reminiscent ...

Between The Buried And Me The Great Misdirect CD  (2009)

CD $11.49  Top 100 Audio Samples
After Between the Buried and Me pushed metalcore purists away with their most progressive release, COLORS, they decided to push even harder for their fifth release. A diverse outing with an unruly amount of genres crammed into only six songs, THE GREAT MISDIRECT is a highly adventurous, very convoluted, wildly dynamic, and extremely difficult listen. Briggs, Waring, Rogers, Waggoner, and Richardson are in top form, with their script-flipping abilities intact and their technical chops at their most extreme. This is a guitarists' album first and foremost (although bass players and drummers are in for a treat, as well), and the playing, while showy, is incendiary. Like a cross between Dream Theater (whom they toured with in 2008) and Dillinger Escape Plan, Between the Buried and Me meld creative aptitude and roaring fury as they skate genres, stapling together speed metal, hardcore, carnival jazz, chamber pop, and a few indefinable Mike Patton-esque styles. "Fossil Genera -- A Feed from Cloud Mountain" fuses loungy Henry Mancini piano with metal guitar and guttural growls in a lighthearted way, but this only lasts for a few minutes; the song takes a dark turn into eight minutes of screaming speed metal before seguing into an epic orchestral ...

Ignore the pseudo-provocative image and whatever you've heard about the stage show, and how does Genitorturers' latest album stack up as music? Surprisingly well -- or maybe not so surprisingly, considering that they've been around since the '90s and should probably be expected to know what they're doing. The big problem is that they're out of time, musically speaking. Their blend of industrial dance and metal had its moment a decade or so ago, and to keep plowing that black-leather-clad groove in 2009 pretty much guarantees a cult audience ...
