Synthesizer album
$15.65 A MIDWINTER NIGHT'S DREAM is an expansion of a 1995 EP called A WINTER GARDEN, on which folksinger Loreena McKinnett tackled traditional Christmas carols. This 13 track version adds a few original holiday songs and more traditional material. Focusing on delightful but less overexposed tunes like "Coventry Carol" and "The Holly and the Ivy," A MIDWINTER ...

| | Enigma Cross Of Changes CD (1994)
Synthesizer music CDs
$11.59 On THE CROSS OF CHANGES, Enigma delves into the mystic with a musical fervor that transcends sampling technologies and popular dance beats. THE CROSS OF CHANGES is a serene yet supremely sensual musical synthesis that might best be characterized as new age hip-hop. Enigma's worldwide hit MCMXC A.D. was notable for, among other things, its use of Gregorian chants as samples in a heady techno mix, which inspired such delirious interest in this ancient music that The Benedictine Monks Of Santo Domingo De Silos are currently enjoying their own Top 10 hit--CHANT.
With THE CROSS OF CHANGES, Enigma's auteur Michael Cretu has merged a series of chants and simple devotional lyrics into a smooth techno-psychedelic wall of sound that is, in contemporary terms, a synthesized flipside to the techno-pop dance grooves of groups like Ace Of Base. Apples and oranges? Certainly, but both groups do employ texture and repetition ...

| | Clannad 2 CD (1974)
Synthesizer album
$15.39 Although best known in the US for their later music, which combined Celtic roots with new age and pop influences, the Irish sibling group Clannad started as a traditional Irish folk group. Indeed, all but three tracks on the group's second album, from 1974, are in Gaelic. The acoustic instrumentation, heavy on the harp and pennywhistle, is lovely but unobtrusive, so that all the focus is on lead singer Maire Brennan's astounding voice.
Every bit as elastic as that of her youngest sister Enya, who would go on to worldwide stardom after a brief early '80s stint in the family business, but much more assertive and less breathy, Maire's voice is one of the most stunning instruments in Celtic music, and it's ...
| | Winter's Solstice, Vol. 6 CD (1997)
Synthesizer CD music
$8.29 This installment of the Winter Solstice series presents an of winter-themed recordings. In addition to usual Windham Hill artists such as George Winston and Liz Story, there are appearances by Marion Meadows, Todd Cochran, Narada recruit David Arkenstone, and the quartet of Brian Keane, Michael Manring, Paul McCandless and Lew Soloff. Perhaps surprisingly, the lack of traditional holiday material only enhances this disc's appeal, as do the first-rate performances. Winter's Solstice Vl is more dynamic and less apt to fade into the background of a wintry eve. ~ Ross Boissoneau

| | Layo & Bushwacka Night Works CD (2002)
Synthesizer music CDs
$22.09 They're a pair of master DJs, but Layo Paskin and Matthew "Bushwacka" B. still haven't released a mix album together. With the production prowess shown on their sophomore set, Night Works, though, fans shouldn't have a problem waiting a bit longer. It helps that the album is as streamlined as a mix set; listeners are well into the third track before they even realize it. "Shining Through" paves over the speed bumps of the usual techno breaks, stream-rollering the percussion and effects until they're smooth as blacktop, but allowing what's left a strength and resiliency that's all the better for the process. A few short, scattered interludes stall the flow a bit, but the rest of the tracks are all quality. "All Night Long" really sparkles, boasting a quick pace, several stylistic change-ups, and the dynamic sonic grandeur of the best Underground Resistance productions. Like exhausted club-kids retreating from the main room into the lounge, the pair spend some time in downtempo territory, with the delicious,dubbed-out Southern soul of "Sleepy Language" and the bluesy breakbeat of "Blind Tiger." Best of all, the duo knows how interminable a 74-minute production LP sounds, so Night Works wraps up after barely three-quarters of an hour. Still, they save the best for second-to-last, another epic production titled "Love Story." ~ John Bush
In a year that's seen an unusual abundance of high quality dance LP releases, it says something that Layo & Bushwacka!'s 'Night Works' ...
| | Pop A Paris: Rock And Roll And Mini Skirts CD (2004)
Synthesizer songs
$13.45 Rock n' Roll and Mini Skirts is a single-disc condensation of the supercool Pop a Paris five-disc series released in France that focused on French singers from the mid-'60s to early '70s. Those discs are a lighthearted blast of Now Sound pop theatrics, aggressive almost garagey rock, and wacky misappropriations of the American pop scene of the '60s. This disc serves as a fine (and readily available) alternative to picking up all five of the discs. The lineup mixes a bunch of familiar names like Serge Gainsbourg, Claude Francoise, France Gall, Brigitte Bardot, and Michel Polnareff with total unknowns like Eileen, Delphine, and Elsa. The track list is sprinkled with a liberal serving of wild covers of rock hits of the day like Johnny Hallyday's funky take on Joe South's "Hush" (here titled "Mal"), David Alexandre Winter's unhinged lounge singer gone mad stylings on Archie Bell & the Drells' "I Can't Stop Dancing," and Marie Laforet's spooky version of the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" (titled "Marie Douceru - Marie Colere"). Where the disc really shines is on the original tracks that are a perfect fusion of pop and French style: the amazing Michel Polnareff's dramatic "Le Roi des Fourmis," Jacqueline Taieb's pounding "Heures du Matin," which quotes "My Generation" and Little Richard to great comic effect, Henri Salvador's silly but still very catchy "Carnaby Street," and Eric Charden's emotional, very Walker Brothers-esque "Le Monde Est Gris, le Monde Est Bleu." The most interesting song on the record might be Delphine's ...
