The immediate success of her triple-platinum debut WHAT'S THE 411? put Mary J. Blige in a singular class as a soul-hop visionary, and opened the door for other hip-hop-influenced R&B acts. Yet as the follow-up approached, the nature of her talent began to be questioned, and the strength of her debut became an obstacle.
If Blige heard all those rumors, she must've decided that musical revenge is the best payback of all. Thus, MY LIFE comes across as another ground-breaking venture, linking R&B's new and old schools, filling the airwaves with delightful harmonies AND hip-hop samples. When Blige connects with her music's roots, she doesn't pussy-foot around soul's perimeters searching for eligible influences--so "You Bring Me Joy," "My Life" and "Be Happy" sample such luminaries as Barry White, Roy Ayers and Curtis Mayfield, respectively. The reconstruction of the Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long" is (Mary Jane) Blige's shout-out to the funky '80s, while "Don't Go" is a feminist retort to Guy's "Goodbye."

Under the guidance of producer/mentor Timbaland, Bubba's follow-up to 2001's DARK DAYS, BRIGHT NIGHTS finds the white rapper elevating his game to a whole new level. While this can most obviously be attributed to Timbaland's stunningly inventive fusion of country and hip-hop, credit also goes out to Bubba himself. Focusing on more sobering subject matter, Bubba proves that an MC can be frank and honest yet still maintain an air of hardness. "Comin' Round," "She Tried," and "Deliverance" find Bubba exploring matters of lower-class conflict, including fatherhood and lost love. Outkast collaborators Organized Noize provide electrifying backup tracks on "New South" and "Back in the Mud," two anthems that showcase Bubba's ability to speak for an entire culture. With such strong performances by Bubba and Timbaland, DELIVERANCE is a work of two artists at their musical prime. A new South, indeed.

This was the fourth in a series of hit albums Linda Ronstadt made in the mid-seventies, starting with HEART LIKE A WHEEL. Like its predecessors, SIMPLE DREAMS is a rich collection of pensive folk ballads, pop with country leanings, and good old rock & roll. Her skill in navigating this rootsy terrain is exemplary, taking her from the swagger of her cover of The Rolling Stones' "Tumbling Dice" to the sweet whisperings of the acoustic "Maybe I'm Right." This record also features some of her most enduringly popular hits, such as "Blue Bayou" and "Poor Poor Pitiful Me."
The rousing opening track, Buddy Holly's "It's So Easy" featuring her trademark growl, along with "Tumbling Dice" and the playful "Poor Poor Pititul Me," give the record moments of electrifying energy. It's the ballads, however, that comprise the majority of the tunes.
