For the Raveonettes' second full-length album, Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo hide their Jesus & Mary Chain-inspired approach in the trunk and take off in a car fueled by vintage 1950s/early-'60s sounds. Here the Danish duo goes for a refined, mellower sound that is enhanced by the pop smarts of returning producer Richard Gottehrer (Blondie). And while earlier outings were recorded solely in the key of B-flat minor or major, PRETTY IN BLACK sports a widen sonic palette that proves to be enthusiastically free of such constraints.
"Love in a Trashcan" works a wonderfully catchy rockabilly riff into one of the group's finest tunes, while "Sleepwalking" features a dreamy-yet-urgent atmosphere, and a cover of "My Boyfriend's Back" is carried along by distorted, sampled beats. In addition to Wagner and Foo's backing band, PRETTY IN BLACK also includes contributions by Ronnie Spector (who provides additional vocals on "Ode to L.A."), former Velvet Underground drummer Moe Tucker, and Suicide keyboardist Martin Rev. The stellar assistance, combined with a palpable sense of liberation, adds up to a fun, dynamic album that stands as the band's best to date.
UK edition includes four bonus tracks. Stylish, confident, and, frankly, slightly menacing, the Raveonettes--Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo--made their mark on the emerging new garage-rock scene in 2002 with a flair for the dramatic. The Danish duo doused their stripped-down songs about sex, suicide, and prostitution with noisy, fuzzed-out guitar, sweet boy-girl harmonies, and sleazy surf-punk twang. It sounded like a clash between Mods and Rockers if the brawl had taken place on the set of California beach movie. 'Pretty in Black' still reflects Sune's love for the early rock innovators Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers. With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. Coming nearly three years after their last album, the Dead Diamond River EP finds the Court & Spark deepening and expanding their sound.
