*Please note you will need an All Code DVD player to view. In the vein of the Buena Vista Social Club, comes the most successful Australian documentary film of 2003. Joe Bussard has been a devoted lover of what he calls the roots of American music - blues, bluegrass and jazz - ever since he was a kid. He has more or less single handedly saved thousands of recordings to ensure the music doesn't fade into oblivion. Now middle aged, Bussard talks about the music, plays the music and stomps to the music. Special features - 40 Minutes of footage not in the original film. Never before seen live performance of John Lee Hooker performing 'Never Get Out Of These Blues Alive'. Full live version of the song 'Death Letter Blues' performed by Son House. 8 page booklet. The CD is also available separately. Australian exclusive PAL / ALL region DVD release. Warner. 2004. Desperate Man Blues (Pal/Region 0) video
$13.85 By the time this album was recorded in 1978, Sun Ra and his Arkestra had been living in Philadelphia for a decade. They journeyed to New York City to record this project for the Philly Jazz Label. The rhythmic bearing of the music, as well as Sun Ra's use of a Fender Rhodes electric piano (especially on the nine-and-a-half minute "Twin Stars Of Thence"), align this music with some of the post-BITCHES BREW releases by Miles Davis.
Ra even brought along two electric guitarists for the date, Dale Williams and Disco Kid. As late '70s fusion-flavored jazz goes, this stands up extremely well, with its rhythmic sensibilities harking back with gusto to earlier decades in the century. The album closer is the chant-filled "There Are Other Worlds (They Have Not Told You Of)"--11 minutes of ever-undulating and gently propulsive groove. Ra's piano playing is gorgeously ethereal ...

| | Desperate Man Blues Discovering The Roots Desperate Man Blues: Discovering The Roots Of American Music CD (2006)
Desperate Man Blues (Pal/Region 0) video
$13.35 In conjunction with the 2006 DVD documentary of record collector Joe Bussard, Dust-to-Digital released this companion CD, featuring 19 tracks in some of the kind of styles -- rural blues, jazz, and old-timey country music, mostly from the '20s and '30s -- that Bussard loves. Desperate Man Blues: Discovering the Roots of American Music isn't exactly a soundtrack to the documentary, since these records are not featured in their entirety in that film. Rather, it's a survey of some of the highlights of the music in which Bussard specializes, the liner notes featuring track-by-track annotation by Bussard himself. It's an excellent mixture of classics by some of the most esteemed early country and blues giants and the kind of more obscure items that are primarily known only to the type of listeners who covet what Bussard collects. Among the classics are Robert Johnson's "Cross Road Blues," Blind Willie McTell's "Statesboro Blues," Clarence Ashley's "The Coo-Coo ...
