Rush is no stranger to best-of compilation albums, they've released a slew of them. They are also no stranger to DVDs. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career. On hearing these tracks without benefit of the visuals, it becomes lucidly clear that in the 21st century, Rush plays more like a hungry act looking to prove themselves rather than as seasoned veterans jaded by the entire business. Paul Oscher is an alumnus of the Muddy Waters band, where he played harmonica in the late '60s, and developed his talent on guitar from watching Muddy himself, and his piano style from the late Otis Spann. This fourth solo outing is a mishmash of sessions -- one of which, his take on "That's Alright," was recorded on cassette in a Brooklyn boarding house. But it hangs together surprisingly well, since Oscher is very much an old-school bluesman. He can delve into the past for obscurities, such as his cover of Big Joe Turner's "Juke Joint," and juggle a variety of different harmonicas on the title cut for a wonderful effect that demonstrates -- in an understated way -- his virtuosity. But he can also create a great atmosphere on accordion, and proves it on "Louis Collins," while "Blues Before Sunrise" shows that he learned very well how to play piano, its dark colors showing in the aching vocal and stark fingerwork. Nor does he ignore the guitar, giving "Anna Lee" a raw slide workout that's packed with passion. Whatever he does, it seems, Oscher is a master, and this is blues well worth hearing. ~ Chris Nickson

Having made a considerable splash with their remixing work in general as well as their well-received first self-titled album, the duo of Lindstrom and Prins Thomas returned with a companion piece to that, pulling off the neat trick of making their own remix collection. Reinterpretations is part compilation, part showcasing of new work, as the various alternate takes that make up most of the disc surfaced on various singles, while the concluding "Nummer Fire En" -- a twenty-minute monster that might almost be a response to LCD Soundsystem's "45:33" -- and "Nummer Fire To" appear on the separately released EP of that same overall title. Unsurprisingly enough, Reinterpretations isn't that far removed at all from its core album in terms of sound and impact, but things are generally far more geared to active listening and dancing here -- the never-never land of exuberant, global dance from past decades reworked and shot into the present is the base. Or rather the bass, as the spare but perfect part on the opening 12" mix of "Turkish Delight" shows -- the song itself becomes a ten-minute long masterpiece and should fairly be called the definitive version, its extended breaks bringing out the details in everything from the ...
