(1 Customer Review)
On their fourth album, PORCELLA, Toronto's Deadly Snakes scrape off the garage grease of earlier releases and indulge a broader range of songwriting influences. The gospel/R&B/rock & roll sound that originally made the Snakes so fierce is still present on smash-and-grab rockers like "Sissy Blues" and "By Morning I'm Gone," but an introspective, almost wistful thread has emerged as well. Guitarist Andre Ethier and keyboardist Age of Danger split vocal duties, and both show a strong penchant for songwriters like Tom Waits ("High Prices Going Down") and Bob Dylan ("My Morning, It's Gone"), in addition to keen baroque-pop sensibilities ("Gore Veil"). The Deadly Snakes have quietly developed into one of the most interesting "garage" bands going; PORCELLA is by far their most adventurous record to date, and arguably the best underground release of 2005.

Uncut (p.114) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "It's a blowsy, carousing affair on a bigger scale than previous LPs, and augmented by strings for the first time." Magnet (p.93) - "[A]n album that revels in its lack of a definitive genre....The Snakes opt more frequently for cerebral noodlers and modern primitivism." Porcella album
$14.49 The Organ's 2002 debut EP Sinking Hearts was more captivating than most of that year's full-length releases: over the course of just 15 minutes, the band crafted chiaroscuro meditations on falling in and out of love that were just as light and jangly as they were dark and brooding. The EP was a promising beginning, and Grab That Gun, the Organ's first album, builds on that promise by delivering more appealingly moody music instead of reinventing the band's sound. It's tempting, initially, to be slightly disappointed that the Organ didn't broaden its ...

Porcella music CDs
$20.79 Even when Meat Loaf hit a few stumbling blocks with his career in the '80s, he always remained one of rock's top concert draws, still able to pull off stirring and emotionally charged shows around the globe. And while a few Meat Loaf live albums came and went throughout his career (such releases as LIVE AT WEMBLEY and LIVE falling out of print), it wasn't until 1996's LIVE AROUND THE WORLD that the excitement of a full Meat Loaf concert was successfully captured on disc. A double-disc set, LIVE AROUND THE WORLD wisely focuses mostly on Jim Steinman compositions (overlooking most of Meat Loaf's oft-forgotten '80s work), particularly readings of tracks from BAT OUT OF HELL and BAT OUT OF HELL II.

| | Paul Motian Sound Of Love CD (1998) (Import)
Porcella songs
$18.55 This live 1995 recording from New York's Village Vanguard club features drummer Paul Motian, guitarist Bill Frisell, and tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano turning in a stellar set of jazz covers and Motian originals (this is the same trio the drummer led in the late '80s and recorded high-profile tributes to Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, and Tin Pan Alley with). As the premium sound quality of the recording makes clear, this trio had an almost telepathic rapport on stage, inspiring each other in both ensemble playing and solo flights. This kind of hand-in-glove chemistry is certainly due in part to the group's many stints on the road, but also comes from the individual ...

Porcella music CDs
$19.79 This 2-for-1 collection combines two records from Canadian rock group the Guess Who, WHEATFIELD SOUL from 1968 and ARTIFICIAL PARADISE from 1973; the former includes the top ten hit "These Eyes."
This two-fer from BMG Canada features a pair of out of print Guess Who LPs: Wheatfield Soul and Artificial Paradise, both originally issued on RCA Victor in 1968 and 1973 respectively. These albums highlight 20 songs, including "Pink Wine Sparkles in the Glass," "Follow Your Daughter Home," "A Wednesday in Your Garden," and the hit "These Eyes." While a greatest-hits package would satisfy most casual listeners' needs, these albums are worth acquiring for fanatics of the '70s Canadian rock group. ~ Al Campbell
Wheatfield Soul by the Guess Who has become a collectors item of sorts over the years, fetching various prices in fan circles, and it is an important "first" step for the reconstituted group which initially hit with "Shakin' All Over" when it was led by Chad Allan. The album is Jack Richardson's excellent production of Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings' music played by this particular four-piece unit, which Peter Clayton's liner notes claim were together "for three years when they cut this album in late 1968." The naïve sound of Cummings' voice on the album tracks is charming, but the hit "These Eyes" has that authority which the band would repeat on diverse chart songs like "No Time," "American Woman," ...
