Synchronicity
$14.29 Christopher Lawrence is a globetrotting house DJ whose singles and mix albums have achieved significant success in the U.K. and who is in constant demand as a touring artist and party DJ, but who, until this release, had yet to release an album of his own compositions. All or Nothing marks his debut as a purveyor of original trance music, and if he hasn't exactly staked out any really new ground as yet, he at least demonstrates that he's learned well the lessons of his forebears. Lawrence's brand of trance is utilitarian, if not quite minimalist. Pretty much every track (with the notable exception of the borderline funky "New Day") is built on a straight-ahead foursquare house beat, around which electronic atmospheres expand and contract. Sometimes (as on "Mind Eraser") they're fairly chilly and robotic-sounding; at other times (as on "Saboteur," the ...

$11.39 Jaki Liebezeit,Can Drummer
Club Off Chaos: Dirk Herweg (strings); Boris Polonski (synthesizer); Jaki Liebezeit (drums). Personnel: Dirk Herweg (strings); Boris Polonski (synthesizer); Jaki Liebezeit (drums). As the drummer for Krautrock legends Can, Jaki Liebezeit knows a thing or two about using electronic instruments in rock music, so it comes as little surprise that this group should approach its debut release with unique compositions from the opposite end, deftly working rock instruments into their electronic sound. The German trio consists of Dirk Herweg on strings, Boris Polonski on synthesizers, and Liebezeit on drums, but from the first moments of the opening track, "7-Bener," it's apparent that the influential drummer is the group's mastermind. As Polonski's synths bubble and gurgle like some sort of synthesized primordial soup, and Herweg's unidentified instrument boings around like Tigger on a sugar and caffeine rush, Liebezeit lays down a syncopated rhythm most drummers would kill for. Not limiting himself to his self-made drum kit, Liebezeit also adds ethnic percussion to lend the programmed tracks an earthy appeal, as if the robots of Kraftwerk had been replaced by playful humans. On "Amphaze," his rollicking rhythms tap into trance-like tribal traditions, pointing out the connection between modern and ancient forms of dance music without even trying. The production is perfect, with just enough reverb and delay to create an otherworldly environment that makes for highly enjoyable headphone listening. With Club Off Chaos, Jaki Liebezeit continues to prove himself years ahead of his time. ~ Bret Love This new trio, culled by former Can beat-maker Jaki Liebezeit, brings back Krautrock not only with a vengeance ...
| | Garage Beat '66 Vol. 4: Doin' Me In! CD (2005)
Synchronicity
$14.65 Personnel: Jeff Hildt (vocals, guitar, drums); Chris Holmes , Bob Meloy, Marty Prue, Scott Heinske, Peter Sando (vocals, guitar); Bob Burgess (vocals, harmonica); Curt Johnson (vocals, organ); Allen Schram (vocals, drums); Phil Donahue, Al Peluso, Dwight Harris, Joe Giannunzio, Robert Kirk, Richard Ehrenberg, Mike Gotcher (vocals); Joe Booher, Tom Sumner, Raymond Schram, Peter Hendleman, Kevin Schröder, Jurgen Peter, Allan Birmingham, Rick Johnson, George Alexander (guitar); Don Roof (harmonica); Bertin Bieda (accordion); Ron Stender (saxophone); Paul Venturini (organ, background vocals); Art Moinlenen, Jim Bertler, Monty Harper (organ); Charles Brodowitz (keyboards, background vocals); Steve Vanderah, Bob Muller, Alan Fowler (drums, background vocals); Earl Hylok, Enrique "Chico" Pacheco, John Duns, Dave Wynne, George Anderson, Larry "Byrd" Hindman, Danny Pacheco, Howie Market, Russ Kunkel, Jay "Icepick" Jackson (drums); James Kendzierski, Jeff Jackson (tambourine); Len Demski, Tom Gloden, Joey Rinaldi (background vocals). Recording information: 1965-1970. Sundazed picks up its Garage Beat '66 series where it left off, with the fourth volume, subtitled I'm in Need!, following the same pattern as the first three, serving up 20 garage rock sides from the latter half of the '60s (1966 is ground zero for this comp, but it features tracks recorded between 1965 and 1970). While this series does have something to offer serious collectors -- primarily excellent sound quality and a handful of previously unreleased tracks -- it isn't intended for garage fanatics: it's designed as the next step for listeners who love Nuggets but don't have the time, inclination, or patience to sort through the various Pebbles and Rubble series. It's also for listeners who have a fairly strict definition of garage, preferring American bands inspired by the Rolling Stones and Yardbirds bashing out blues-influenced primitive rockers, not the psychedelia that runs rampant through Nuggets, because there's precious little of that to be found here. Which isn't to say that Garage Beat is monotonous (well, no more than any other garage rock comp, but anybody interested in this music knows that going into the disc). ...

When Slick covers a tune, he breathes new life into the song by taking it into unexpected directions. The Philly Rock Guide has called his work, "A witty amalgam of folk, rock and world beat rhythms." Option Magazine said "Slick is a songwriter who crafts his music into the far horizons of artistic vision. He takes inspiration and molds it into a rewarding end product." He has shared the stage with artists ranging from Pete Seeger and David Bromberg to Blues Traveler and The Hooters. His live performances have taken Slick from the legendary folk club Godfrey Daniels to New York's famous CBGB's, from festivals to coffeehouses, ...
