Bobby Freeman's Do You Wanna Dance? has both of the rock & roll wild man's hits: 1958's "Do You Wanna Dance?" and 1964's Sly Stone-produced "C'Mon & Swim." The rest of the disc is padded out with ballads ("Ebb Tide," "Need Your Love," "My Guardian Angel"), carbon-copy follow-ups to his two hits ("She Said She Wants to Dance," "S-W-I-M"), and some fine rockers ("Mary Lou Got a New Pair of Shoes," "Mary Ann Thomas," "The Mess Around"). It feels skimpy (and indeed replaces an earlier collection of the same name on Collectables that had 12 tracks), but unless you are a budding Freeman fanatic, it should be enough. ~ Tim Sendra
The title track is one of the great pieces of '50s R&B/rock and roll and was Freeman's moment of glory. The rest of the album is decent, occasionally above-average pop and light R&B, sung in an energetic fashion but not exactly spectacular stuff. It is fun, however, and if you can find the album, it's well worth getting. ~ Ron Wynn

Do You Wanna Dance album
$6.35 The Almeria Club was a hard-edged, Alabama honky-tonk that was the site of a hot-tempered 1947 incident that became part of the lore of Hank Williams. More than 50 years later, Hank Jr. recorded an album in that very same notorious joint as a tribute to his father's rebel reputation. In keeping with the down-home theme, the production is agreeably raw and rootsy, bouncing from rockabilly ("Go Girl Go") to jump blues ("If the Good Lord's Willin'") and the ZZ Top-like blues-rock (the salacious double entendre "Last Pork Chop") that is a staple of Hank Jr.'s work. In keeping with his image as a flag-waving Charlie Daniels-like figure, Williams caps off the album with "America Will Survive," a post-9/11 anthem of transcendence that is ironically one of the least country-flavored tunes on the album.

| | Vince Gill Next Big Thing CD (2003)
Do You Wanna Dance music CDs
$12.59 "Next Big Thing" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
This album's title is an ironic one, since Vince Gill has spent plenty of time as the Big Thing in country music. He started out as a hot-pickin' bluegrass guitarist before going solo in the mid-'80s. Some 20 years down the line, Gill has nothing to prove but still plenty to say. As always, his sound is a mix of Rodney Crowell-style '80s New Traditionalism, white soul, and pop, with a touch of that bluegrass influence coming through in his keening tenor. He's still the Mr. Nice Guy of contemporary country, soft-pedaling both the songs and the singing in a manner not unlike the Timothy B. Schmit portion of the Eagles' catalogue.
"Young Man's Town" ups the soul influence and adds a touch of Springsteen sentimentalism, while the aptly named "Old Time Fiddle" shows Gill's traditional roots, and "Without You" ventures into Ray Price-meets-Bob Wills territory. The marimba-laden "We Had it All" is something of a Marty Robbins update, and things close out tastefully with the gentle, soulfully sung "In These Last Few Days." If you're looking ...

| | Restless Heart Still Restless CD (2004)
Do You Wanna Dance album
$9.29 Still Restless is the first album of all new studio material in 14 years by Restless Heart. Little has changed since their self-titled debut album was released in 1985; their perfect harmonies and smooth country-rock arrangements remain intact. Basically, Restless Heart picked up where they left off in the mid-'90s, sticking with their strong points instead of radically changing their musical direction. Highlights include the mandolin-dominated "Feel My Way to You," the soft rock, ...
