Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich are best known as songwriters but as for their output dubbed the Raindrops exhibits, they were fine performers too. Collectables' The Kind of Boy You Can't Forget rounds up ten of the group's light-hearted girl group tunes including the wonderful title track, which was their only hit. The duos' frothy production, Barry's goofy bass vocals, and Greenwich's impassioned leads make for fun and breezy listening as they run through songs written for them that were made hits by others ("Da Doo Ron Ron," "Not Too Young to Get Married," in the recent past, "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" in the near future) and some that should have been hits for them, like "What a Guy" and "That Boy John." The only problem with the disc is that the entire Raindrops' discography fits on one disc (Sequel released such a package in 1995 called, unsurprisingly, The Complete Raindrops, and Collectables itself released a disc that had all but three of the group's songs in 1999). If you are interested enough in the band to want to buy this disc, you'll probably want all of their work and should track down the Sequel disc if you can. NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. Paul Cotton is pleased to announce the release of his first solo project in ten years: "Firebird." Paul Cotton is a familiar name to those who treasure rock and roll witha country flavor. Perhaps best known for his years as a lead guitarist and vocalist with Poco, Paul has had a remarkable music career. With such favorite tunes as "Heart of the Night," "Bad Weather," and "Midnight Rain," Paul has captivated audiences for over 25 years. Paul charged onto the music scene in 1968 with Illinois Speed Press. The band opened for major acts such as Led Zepplin, Chicago, & Steppenwolf. After only two albums, the group parted. The situation inspired Paul to write his classic hit "Bad Weather." It was in 1969 when the Illinois Speed Press was opening for Pogo, who later changed their named to Poco, that Paul first met with the band members of Poco. After the breakup of ISP, he auditioned for them, playing "Bad Weather." In September of 1970, Paul was invited to tour with Poco. Paul officially became a member of the band on October 31, 1970, when he played his first show at The Fillmore. The band used the song "Bad Weather" to introduce Paul to the audience. Many Poco fans consider this song to be the full realization of a true country rock sound.When Poco took a break from recording in 1984, Paul moved toNashville with Poco member Rusty Young for a songwriting stint.
