The Triffids are coming! The Triffids are killing! A shower of meteorites produces a glow that blinds anyone that looks at it. As it was such a beautiful sight, most people were watching, and as a consequence, 99% of the population go blind. This chaos results in the escape of some Triffids: experimental plants that are capable of moving themselves around and attacking people. A meteor shower disrupts the earth's ecosystem by blinding mankind and awakening meat-eating plants. As the hungry foliage grow ever faster, a sighted sailor and an alcoholic scientist help save humanity from becoming plant food. A meteor shower disrupts the earth's ecosystem and, unfortunately for the roughly 99% of the world's population that either advertently or inadvertently witnessed the beautiful but dangerous event, it blinds them. Moments later, Bill Masen takes off his hospital blindfold and realizes he's one of the only people with sight left on Earth. It just might be up to Bill and an alcoholic scientist to care of the Triffids, sentient and hostile alien plant life triggered by the blinding blast to emerge from spores that had already been brought to Earth by an earlier meteor shower. Based on a novel by John Wyndham that originally revolved around experimental-but-decidedly-earthly plants running amok, many elements were added to this feature adaptation to make it somewhat reminiscent of WAR OF THE WORLDS. The screenplay was originally credited to only Phillip Yordan, with co-scribe Bernard Gordon receiving no billing. Filmed at Shepperton Studios, London, England.
Color by Eastmancolor; shot in CinemaScope.

"Because of worldwide disruption, it is impossible for delegates to gather. Paris itself, with its millions of helpless inhabitants, has become dangerous. This will be our last broadcast. There is no one here who can see. There is no one left." (Radio broadcast from Paris)
"All plants move. They don't usually pull themselves out of the ground and chase you..." (Tom)
"Most plants thrive on animal waste. But I'm afraid this mutation possesses a taste for the animal itself." (Mr. Cocker to Bill Mason)

Day of the Triffids In short, this is a good movie when you allow for the dated [as all become] special effects. The story isn't as outlandish as one might imagine - so if you can open your mind and see the story, you will really like this -- I hope someone sees the potential for a modern high budget re-make, but this version will always be on my shelf and watched. Jump in and enjoy the ride. Submitted by SWILGUS (El Paso, Texas, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Day of Triffids ( Outstanding) Great film all around. A meteor shower makes everybody blind. This makes them easy pry for carnivous plants that layed dorment until this meteor shower stimlated them to go on their murderous rampage. I higly recomend this film if you like classic horror stories. Filmed in color and this version being widescreen adds to the enjoyment. Day Of The Triffids film
$10.29 Don Siegel's cult masterpiece, interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism, is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell, a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks, he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira, his nurse, Sally (Jean Willes), explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home, claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern of incidents, temporarily allayed by some jargon from the town psychiatrist, is newly aroused when he gets a phone call ...

Day Of The Triffids DVD
$9.69 Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come 250 million miles to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity ...
