Challengingly stylish and original, Ma Mre is the story of Hlne (Isabelle Huppert), cool and in charge, her husband, and her teenage son Pierre (Louis Garrel), a pious Catholic boy back from boarding school. As Hlne confesses to her son about his father's infidelity, they hear he has been tragically killed in a car crash. This news sets in motion a wild series of parties involving drugs, alcohol and sex-filled nights out with Hlne and her female lover. Inexplicably, she pulls her son into her sordid lifestyle. When she mysteriously goes away, her son is left in the care of her mistress Ra (Joana Preiss) and Hansi (Emma de Caunes), an icy blonde sadist with whom he falls in love. Adapted from the provocative novel by transgressive postmodern intellectual and author Georges Bataille, MA MERE is set in the visually lush and spiritually empty tourist trap of the Canary Islands. Louis Garrel, projecting the same European sultriness that was perfectly suited to Bertolucci's more warmly erotic film THE DREAMERS, plays Pierre, a sulking and antisocial teenager, willfully indifferent to being on summer vacation with his parents. When his wayward father suddenly dies, his mother Helene (Isabelle Huppert), forces him into her universe of illicit sex--a simultaneously ugly and playful realm inhabited by Gallic sophisticates engaging in orgies and bondage. Pierre, a devout Catholic, is resistant at first--to the point of Catholic guilt-induced attacks of sobbing and hyperventilation. But after fulfilling experiences with Helene's male and female playmates, Pierre obsessively pursues the sexual attention of his own mother, and a disturbing quest toward consummation of the attraction between mere and fils is undertaken.
Star Isabelle Huppert's role as Helene is a perfect follow-up to her award-winning turn in the equally shocking LA PIANISTE, which featured the French fatale engaging in illicit acts with both a young male student and her own controlling, elderly mother. With her just barely constrained and visibly volatile sexual energy, the actress has become known as the "go-to girl" for roles that transcend sexual and social taboos and explore the dark and violent side of erotic desire. Her overpowering presence in MA MERE, as all great performances do, make the viewer wonder just how blurry the boundaries between actress and role have become. $17.59 From his current post in Antarctica, British glaciologist Matt (Kieran O'Brien), recalls how he met Lisa (Margo Stilley), a 21-year-old American student. They were at a rock concert at London's Brixton Academy, and he took her back to his apartment for sex. This began a brief relationship, which is revealed as Matt remembers and comments on its milestones--mainly the other concerts they attended and their significant sexual experiences--before their initial sexual attraction waned and they were forced to part.
The titular nine songs are comprised of concert performances by 1) Primal Scream, 2) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, 3) Elbow, 4) Michael Nyman, 5) Super Furry Animals, 6) The Dandy Warhols, 7) Von Bondies, 8) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club again, and 9) Franz Ferdinand. Shot on often-blurry, handheld digital video from an audience perspective, these scenes have a you-are-there effect. The sequences involving Matt and Lisa are intimate and realistic (be warned--the sex in the film is real and graphic), conveying everything one needs to know about their relationship with only the most rudimentary dialogue. With this brief, dreamlike work, director Michael Winterbottom (24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE) has theoretically created the ultimate music movie--one that is purely sex, drugs, and rock & roll. The result is akin to the feeling of listening to a great mix tape made by a former lover.
Matt, a young glaciologist, soars across the vast, silent, icebound immensities of the South Pole as he recalls his love ...

$16.75 Often eclipsed in Western eyes by the more volatile Takashi Miike and the eclecticism of Takeshi Kitano, Japanese director Rokuro Mochizuki is slowly filtering across this divide, quietly stunning his growing number of adherents. Consciously eschewing most artistic conventions, his yakuza films give a frank treatment to the brutal violence they depict, but turn upon subtly-drawn characterizations, with stories that rely heavily on the intricacies of relationships. After cutting his teeth in the pink film industry (or Japanese porn), Mochizuki imbues his depictions of sexuality with great importance, but never in an exploitative way; instead, sexual relations are used to provide depth to the story. ONIBI picks up many of the themes seen in the director's previous work, most notably 1995's ANOTHER LONELY HITMAN, describing the alienation of a yakuza mobster upon his release from prison. Kunihiro has vowed to go straight after 27 years in prison, ...

$7.95 Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, PAN'S LABYRINTH is a thrilling, violent fairy tale set in post-Civil War Spain. Ivana Baquero stars as Ofelia, a young girl who moves with her mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil), into the home of Captain Vidal (Sergi López), in an abandoned mill in the middle of dark, dangerous woods. Vidal is leading his team of soldiers against resistance fighters--and he will do whatever is necessary to kill every last one of them. As Vidal bosses around the pregnant Carmen, a flying creature leads Ofelia through a garden labyrinth and into an underground cave ruled by Pan (HELLBOY's Doug Jones), who believes that Ofelia might be the lost princess of this strange yet magical place. To prove she is royalty, Ofelia must complete three tasks, each more difficult and terrifying than the previous one. Meanwhile, Vidal is becoming more and more paranoid, torturing and murdering seemingly at will. Del Toro (THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, HELLBOY, CRONOS) creates a marvelous battle between good and evil, between heroes and villains, in both the real world aboveground and the mystical land below. Baquero gives a compelling ...
