Star anchorman Manolo Bonilla (John Leguizamo) of the Latin broadcasting One Hour With the Truth program has flown down to a small town in Ecuador with producer Marisa (Leonor Watling) and cameraman Ivan (Jose Maira Yazpik) on the trail of a child serial killer and rapist, The Monster of Babahoyo. Manolo is determined to be the hero who single-handedly stops the hero. Cronicas attempts to approach the metaphor of who the true monster is - the criminal, the media, or our society? Damian Alcazar also stars. Extras include deleted scenes, director & star commentary, alternate film ending, making of featurette, still photo gallery, Soledad recording session, previews, mor

The murky ethics surrounding tabloid journalism mix with serial-killer intrigue in this powerful film by Ecuadorian writer-director Sebastian Cordero. John Leguizamo stars as Manolo, a Miami-based television reporter for a Spanish-language, real-crime TV show called One Hour with the Truth. While researching a story on The Monster, a child murderer who has been terrorizing an area of Ecuador, Manolo and his crew wind up in the epicenter of a violent near-lynching when a traveling bible salesman named Vinicio (Damián Alcazár) accidentally hits a small boy with his car and kills him. Terrified of being murdered in jail by the boy's father, the badly beaten Vinicio hints that he is willing to reveal clues to the serial killer's identity to help Manolo get his story on the air. A strange psychological game develops between Manolo--who seems to think he can trick Vinicio into confessing his identity as The Monster (thus getting the scoop of the century)--and Vinicio, who wants to use Manolo's media power to get him out of jail in time to see his his wife give birth to his child. Leguizamo shows star wattage in the lead; he's great in Spanish-language role, and he delivers a relatively restrained performance as a journalist letting ambition get the better of his judgment. Spanish actress Leonor Watling is also good as his sexy love interest. Gloomy location photography creates a rain-soaked, poverty-stricken ambiance that's memorably unsettling. Alfonso Cuaron and Jorge Vergara (Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN) produce this riveting film.

Theatrical Trailer: JULY 8, 2005

Cronicas Reviews:

"[T]he movie is worth seeing for Leguizamo's sinewy urgency, Alcazar's desperate cleverness as the killer, and the squalid, frantic atmosphere of Latin American hunger." -- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

"CRONICAS is a raw and powerful suspense thriller set in Latin America that also is a timely commentary on the tabloid nature and sensationalism of TV news. It examines how far journalists should go to get a story and raises concerns about the methods used to gather sensitive information."-- Claudia Puig, USA Today

A rougher version of George Roy Hill's pet theme of men as overaged adolescents, SLAP SHOT stars Paul Newman as Reggie Dunlop, the venerable player-coach of the Charlestown Chiefs, a fifth-rate minor league hockey team. When their blue-collar town falls prey to Rust Belt ills of the 1970s, attendance drops, and the greedy owner starts looking for a buyer, anxious to cash out. Dunlop is informed that the players need to crank up the box office to keep their jobs in what will likely be their last season. To the coach's dismay, general manager Joe McGrath (Strother Martin) imports the Hanson brothers, a hockey Three Stooges who like to assault soda machines and play with toys. But once Dunlop turns them loose, they're a Panzer division on ice, and the team starts winning by adopting their bone-crushing style. Although the team is on the upswing, Dunlop's wife, Francine (Jennifer Warren), seems to be through with him, and the isolated wives of the other players aren't much happier with their fate. This sidesplitting, profanity saturated film is one of the funniest ever made about any sport. While writer Nancy Dowd intended to probe darker issues--such as the greed of ownership, the blood lust of fans, and the childishness of the players--Hill submerges them in raucous laughter. Newman is near his peak as the romantic, manipulative, womanizing, hard-drinking coach, and the high-sticking Hanson brothers achieve comic immortality in their only film appearance. DVD $10.29  4.7 stars Top 500
Robert Rodriguez (SPY KIDS, DESPERADO) directed this hyperkinetic kids' film based on a script by his pre-teen son, Racer. The plot concerns a daydreaming youngster named Max (Cayden Boyd) whose fantasy stories about the titular superheroes--the molten-hot Lava Girl (Taylor Dooley), and a boy raised by sharks appropriately named Shark Boy (Taylor Lautner)--inspire the ridicule of everyone from the local bullies to his own mom (Kristin Davis). Even Max's fourth grade teacher (George Lopez) wants him to come down to earth, but then a tornado brings Shark Boy and Lava Girl into the school to whisk Max off to the planet Drool, where only his dreaming skills can save the day. A real kid's active imagination is obviously at work here, because the giddy action flies in all directions with a cheerful disregard for conventions of logic or sanity, and Rodriguez is obviously the right sort of adult to bring such a film to life (he must be a great dad). The message about the importance of not just believing in your dreams but working to achieve them should prove relevant for an audience who may be spending a bit too much time in front of the TV or computer game. The cool 3-D effects are something else, with goo and fists and lunging Shark Boy regularly leaping off of the screen. But even without the 3-D amplification, viewers will be dazzled by the film's wild, day-glo color scheme. Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English
