Kolchak: The Night Stalker review Product Description

Kolchak: The Night Stalker movie was released Oct 04, 2005 by the Universal Studios Home Video studio. This classic original 20-episode series from 1974-75 star Darren McGavin with guest stars Scatman Crothers, Dick Van Patten, Jamie Farr, Jim Backus, and more. Kolchak: The Night Stalker video The episodes have been digitally restored for maximum clarity.

The cult television series that inspired THE X-FILES, KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER was not nearly as successful as that later show yet still maintains an influence. Kolchak: The Night Stalker film The show, which ran from 1974 to '75 follows the creepy adventures of Carl Kolchak, a scruffy, cynical reporter played by Darren McGavin. Kolchak: The Night Stalker review When Kolchak finds that the murderer responsible for a series of bloody murders plaguing his home city of Las Vegas is a member of the undead, a vampire out for food, he undertakes a quest to defeat the bloodsucking fiend. Gritty, dark, and dramatic, KOLCHAK was described by many critics as too scary for television.

Great Series
I don't believe I could have been more thrilled when I saw they had released Kolchak: The Night Stalker on a DVD box set. I loved the show way back when it was on TV in the 70's and I am finding I still love the series today as I have been watching each episode. Darren McGavin was a perfect choice for the role as Kolchak. He certainly seemed to enjoy every minute of appearing in it. And Simon Oakland as his suffering over ulcered boss made a great co-star. They both played off each other brilliently. It would have been nice if they had included the two made for TV movies that helped start the series but since I had both of those already on DVD I can't complain too much.

Horror
Darrin makes it all so easy as he is the original ghost hunter, vampire slayer or x-files hero. There is a movie called The Norliss tapes here at CDU with Roy Thinnes and Angie Dickenson which was made by Dan Curtis before this series and may have been the series Curtis had in mind but changed it to Kolchak. Both are need for your collection. Turn off the cable and put in some DVD classics.

Outstanding 70's horror!
Darren McGavin is terrific as Carl Kolchak reporter for INS in Chicago snooping into wacko stories of Zombies, Vampires, aliens & all else supernatural! If you like Columbo and horror films this is a very good 17 hours of entertainment. Great popcorn fare. Also offers Spanish subtitles.

Solid video set could have a better transfer
This TV series along with the two movies that Darren McGavin starred in as Carl Kolchak inspired both "The X-Files" and the shortlived "Night Stalker" TV series. Kolchak is an investagative reporter who continually comes across stories involving the supernatural and creatures of one sort or another. His long suffering editor Vincenzo (the wonderful Simon Oakland)puts up with Kolchak's preposterous stories because, well, he knows the guy is a terrific writer. Image quality starts off too dark with "The Ripper" and improves marginally with further episodes of the show. There are no extras which is a shame. As usual Universal has put minimal effort into putting togethter a great set for this cult series and missed their chance to have commentary tracks and a retrospective featurette. With McGavin's recent death (Oakland died some time ago) there are few people associated with the show still around. If Universal had done right by this show (like Warner has for many of their cult classics)we'd get a couple of commentary tracks, featurettes and vintage interviews. It's not a bad set but it could be so much better.
