| | Paul Gurvitz Rated PG CD Paul Gurvitz Discography of CDs
After the sad demise of the Baker Gurvitz Army in the late 70's, Paul Gurvitz went on to appear as bassist, vocalist and producer on four of his brother Adrian's solo releases between 1978 and 1982. In 1985 Gurvitz was signed to Chrysalis music and travelled to the US to pursue a career as a songwriter. It didn't take long to succeed with a hit; ironically it was with a British band. The family quintet Five Star, who had their first big hit in the UK with "All Fall Down", followed by the top ten hits "Let Me Be The One" and "Find The Time". The latter was written by Gurvitz, who also wrote another two chart topping singles for the band.

Rated PG album
$21.09 Pete Brown's debut album may not have been as accessible as those of Cream (for whom he often helped write material) or even the early Jack Bruce (for whom he continued to collaborate as a songwriter). There are similarities, however, though more to Bruce's solo work than to Cream. For one thing, there are those lyrics, which are of a far higher standard than heard on most rock songs, ranging from ominous impressionism to take-out-the-piss political satire. Then there's Brown's voice, which rather resembles a gruff Jack Bruce, and is effective though certainly not as smoothly melodic as Bruce's vocals. And then there's the music, which grew out of the same jazz-blues-rock community that gave birth to the Graham Bond Organisation, Cream, and Colosseum. In fact, two other alumni of that scene, Bond (on organ) and Dick Heckstall-Smith (on saxophone), are among the supporting players, as is a young Chris Spedding. There are also unusual psychedelic and Middle Eastern accents here and there in the arrangements, though tasteful and subdued. Because there aren't the pop hooks of the songs Brown had a hand with in Cream, and because Brown's voice is not that of your average rock frontman, it's not something that ever got a wide audience. But it has its rewards ...

| | Alphonse Mouzon On Top Of The World CD (1994)
Rated PG songs
$13.85 Though lovers of easygoing, likable, and funkified pop-jazz would say that Alphonse Mouzon is a brilliant composer of lightweight confections, while some will argue that his greatest talent is as a ringleader. His tunes dance on the fluffier edges of soul, and he knows just how to bounce them up electronically, but in the end too many of them run together: similar melodies and repetitive tempos. What lifts this collection are the dynamic charges offered by his guest sax crew of Richard Elliot, Everette Harp, Brandon Fields, Eric Marienthal, Gerald Albright, and in a few tender moments, Russ Freeman's elegant acoustic guitar. Mouzon doesn't give them quite the amount of space they need to stretch out, but they make the most of each session. What's clear from the song titles is that Mouzon is in love, and that complacent happiness shines through. But veteran listeners these days will probably demand more excitement than these pleasantries offer. ~ Jonathan Widran

| | Limp Bizkit Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavored Water CD (2000)
Rated PG album
$12.05 Some of Limp Bizkit's critics were quick to dismiss the band as a passing fad, and few lead singers seem to be as hated as Fred Durst, but the undeniable facts remain: since rap-metal came into its own, Limp Bizkit have been among the genre's top players. Their much-anticipated follow-up to SIGNIFICANT OTHER treads similar ground, with a few hidden aces to spare. Lyrically, Durst continues to focus on both the frustrations that accompany success (especially in "My Way"), and his mainstay of demanding validation ("Full Nelson.")
CHOCOLATE STARFISH has some truly heavyweight production credits, including Terry Date (Pantera, Soundgarden), Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Jeff Buckley), and even the Stone Temple Pilots' Scott Weiland, who co-writes and contributes guest vocals on "Hold On." The House Of Pain groove in "Rollin' (Air Raid Vehicle)" will certainly inspire the "rockers and hip-hoppers" that it calls to arms. Ironically the tracks that seem the most out of place on CHOCOLATE STARFISH are those with guest rapping by Xzibit, ...
| | Lettuce Outta Here CD (2002)
Rated PG CD music
$12.05 Lettuce is the group that began the careers of several noted "jam band" musicians: Eric Krasno of Soulive, Adam Deitch of the John Scofield Band, Adam Smirnoff of the Squad, Jeff Bhayshk of Kudu, Ryan Zoidis of Rustic Overtones, and Eric Coomes, now a Los Angeles-based producer. Outta Here is essentially a reunion project featuring these players and several special guests, including trombonist Fred Wesley, Soulive organist Neal Evans, and John Scofield himself. Toni Smith also contributes an alluring R&B vocal on "Twisted." Although the album is overly reliant on funk clichés, there are some captivating moments, mostly toward the end of the disc. The groove on "Nyack" is something else -- so good that a bonus live version closes out the disc, giving the listener a good sense of what the band does on stage (hint: it cooks). Keep the disc playing and you'll hear a 45-second snippet ...

| | Bon Jovi Slippery When Wet CD (1986) DualDisc
Rated PG songs
$15.49 All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by George Marino (Summer 1998, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Bon Jovi took a few faltering steps with their promising self-titled debut album and its shoddy 7800 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT follow-up. However, it was with this third record, a mixture of New Jersey storytelling and songwriter/collaborator Desmond Child's keen awareness of commercial appeal, that the perfect equation of songs and suss was established. The almost noble "Wanted Dead Or Alive" spawned a thousand copycat monochrome, on-the-road videos, while the sure-fire snap of "Livin' On A Prayer" and "You Give Love A Bad Name" simply elevated the banner much higher.
This dualdisc includes a newly remastered version of the classic album ...
