Vancouver's favorite local pop-rock boys. Lead singer Jacob Hoggard was a Canadian Odol finalist.
This is the debut album by Canadian alternative-pop quartet Hedley, featuring "On My Own." This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Jacob Hoggard (vocals); Brian Howes (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Ben Kaplan (guitar, programming); Dave Rosin (guitar, background vocals); Dave Genn (guitar); Chris Crippin (drums, background vocals); Tommy Mac (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Mike Fraser; Randy Staub . Recording information: Armoury Studios, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Greenhouse Studios, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Hipposonic Studios, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Mushroom Studios, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; The Farm Studios, Gibson's Landing, British Columbia, C. Photographer: Ivan Otis. On its self-titled debut, the Canadian punk-pop group Hedley offers up a charmingly dynamic set that ranges from the revved-up, New Wave-tinged single "On My Own" to the pensive ballad "Trip." Led by singer Jacob Hoggard, one of the finalists on the second season of the CANADIAN IDOL reality-TV show, the band deftly balances accessible tunes with edgier material, resulting in a widely appealing sound. Hedley's claim to fame is that frontman Jacob Hoggard was a fan favorite on the 2003 season of Canadian Idol before being voted off (much to his delight) in the semi-finals. Hoggard never planned on making it so far in the contest, and ultimately realized he didn't even want to win, since that meant being tied to a record deal performing someone else's songs. Fast-forward a few years and now he's fronting his own band, Hedley, with former members of Vancouver's Everything After. On their self-titled debut, Hedley basically play a poppier, lighter-edged version of the rock performed by fellow countrymen Social Code, which only vaguely resembles the pop-punk of, say, Simple Plan, and leans somewhat closer to the camps of SR-71 or Bowling for Soup. The album is competent, highlighted by the swirling guitars and exuberant hooks of standout tracks like the empowered "On My Own" or "I Don't Believe It," although even these songs take a couple spins to really grab listeners. ~ Corey Apar Hedley's claim to fame is that frontman Jacob Hoggard was a fan favorite on the 2003 season of Canadian Idol before being voted off (much to his delight) in the semifinals. But despite noble intentions to want to write and perform their own songs, it's just not enough to carry the guys all the way through this competent though largely uninteresting album. Even the swirling guitars and exuberant hooks of standout tracks like the empowered "On My Own" or "I Don't Believe It" aren't that memorable, taking a couple spins to really grab listeners at all. The ballad-like sap of tracks like "Trip" and "Saturday" are where Hoggard's borderline snotty vocals start to grate on one's nerves, and the lyrics don't really help his cause. Especially in a song like "Street Fight," lines like "Got in a street fight/With the I.R.S. and I'm alright/Took one to the chest but I'm fine" are a little perplexing when later followed with "But I'm not the only one with name-brand shoes on/You fucking moron." So, uh, they were the little guys who went up against the man and came out victorious, Hedley Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews AMAZING best band ever, all songs are amazing if you have never heard of them buy their albums they rule Submitted by scrubsrox (bude, cornwall, england) Was This Review Helpful? Hedley
$14.09 Audio Mixer: Randy Staub . When Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002, it had already been several years since most Alice in Chains fans stopped hoping for a new album. The singer had become a recluse since the late-`90s, and there was little indication that AIC would ever again produce much in the way of new music. As a result, when the remaining members reunited to release BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE in 2009, expectations were low. To the ...

$14.45 Adapters: John Leventhal; Rosanne Cash. Personnel: Jeff Tweedy, Rufus Wainwright, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen (vocals); John Leventhal (guitar, dobro, mandolin, harmonica, harmonium, organ, Wurlitzer organ, drums, percussion); RIck DePofi (bass clarinet, horns, piano); Zev Katz, Tim Luntzel (upright bass); Joe Bonadio, Shawn Pelton (drums); Curtis King (background vocals). Audio Mixers: John Leventhal; RIck DePofi. Photographer: Deborah Feingold. Arrangers: John Leventhal; Rosanne Cash. After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When ...

| | Kid Rock Devil Without A Cause CD (1998) (Import) Import; Australia
Hedley
$30.19 This edition has a bonus track, "Krack Rocks." It's unlikely that even Kid Rock believed he had an album as good as Devil Without a Cause in him. Nobody else believed it, that's for sure. But he didn't just find the perfect extention of his Beastie and Diamond Dave infatuations here, he came up with the great hard rock album of the late '90s -- a fearlessly funny, bone-crunching record that manages to sustain its strength, not just until the end of its long running time, but through repeated plays. The key to its sucesss is that it's never trying to be a hip-hop record. It's simply a monster rock album, as Twisted Brown Trucker turns out thunderous, funky noise -- and that's funky not just in the classic sense, but also in a Southern-fried, white trash sense, as he gives this as much foundation in country as he does hip-hop. But what really reigns supreme on Devil Without a Cause is a love of piledriving, classic hard rock, not just that of hometown hero Bob Seger, but Lynyrd Skynyrd, Van Halen, and faceless arena rock ballads. The Kid makes it all shine with rhymes so clever and irresistible that it's impossible not to quote them. For all its modernity -- Rock's rapping, the titanic metallic guitars, Joe C's sideshow sidekick, the plea to "get ...

| | Reel Big Fish We're Not Happy 'Til You're Not Happy CD (2005)
Hedley
$7.59 Reel Big Fish: Scott Klopfenstein (vocals); Matt Wong (bass instrument); Dan Regan, Aaron Barrett, John Christianson. Personnel: Aaron Barrett (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Scott Klopfenstein (guitar, trumpet, keyboards, background vocals); John Christianson (trumpet); Dan Regan (trombone); Justin Ferreira (drums). Audio Mixers: Shawn Sullivan; David Irish. Recording information: Milano Recording Studios, Orange, CA; World Class Audio, Anaheim, CA. Photographer: John Halpern. Arranger: Reel Big Fish. We're Not Happy 'Til You're Not Happy is Reel Big Fish's first album in three years. But if the title isn't a giveaway, this feels more like an embittered farewell than a triumphant return. The artwork features a bonfire built from mangled instruments, the band fight against a sinking ship, and frontman Aaron Barrett sings angrily about his band, thankless fans, record industry stupidity, and a few ex-girlfriends. And yet, as they did with the 1996 hit "Sell Out," Reel Big Fish attach their cynicism to buoyant melodies, ringing guitars, and charming inflections of their third-wave past. For a band so angry about their state of being, Reel Big Fish sure seem game to keep plugging away, and this conflicted sentiment makes We're Not Happy confusing. "One Hit Wonderful" begins with a montage of "flashback lunch" radio DJs and snippets of "Sell Out" before slamming fickle fans into an Irish drinking song sway. "Last Show" pulls even fewer punches -- "I've learned my lesson/I'll never follow my dreams again," Barrett sings -- but it's one of We're Not Happy's hookiest tracks. Even the covers are telling, as Big Fish fry up ska-punk'd versions of Social Distortion's "Story of My Life" (where they sound exactly like Smash Mouth) and Morrissey's "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful." (Another cover, Tracy Chapman's "Talkin' Bout a Revolution," misses the point completely.) What do Reel Big Fish really want? Opener "Fire" is a refreshing blast in the vein of classic Operation Ivy, but it also considers the futility of making music. Then there's the self-explanatory "Don't Start a Band." It has none of the veteran's tone of warning, à la Less Than Jake's 2003 LP Anthem; it just hammers home record biz shenanigans over another sunny ska-punk hook. "Turn the Radio Off" is the final word, denouncing the industry, radio, its "zombie" listeners, and seemingly by association, Reel Big Fish themselves. And naturally it's super catchy. ~ Johnny Loftus When Reel Big Fish broke through with their 1996 record, ...

This re-released edition of the French pop starlet's 1988 album explores sad, subtle ballads like "Seules Les Filles Pleurent," as well as more big beat-oriented workouts, in a set that's also peppered with the synth-pop stylings that made her a household word in her native country throughout the '80s. Lio's fifth album, following a solid commercial high point with her Pop Model release, found her indulging a more varied side of her art, resulting ...
