Gypsy Rhythm music CDs
$13.89 The first album by Portland, Oregon's tongue in cheek lounge pop orchestra Pink Martini, SYMPATHIQUE, was originally released in 1997 on the band's own Heinz label. Although the album contains two originals by singer China Forbes and pianist Thomas Lauderdale, the title track and "Lullaby," the bulk of the album's 12 songs consists of new arrangements of loungy favorites like "Never On Sunday," "Que Sera Sera," "Brazil," and "Song of the Black Lizard," taken from the soundtrack of a Japanese cult film. Unlike ...

| | Yasmin Levy Mano Suave CD (2007)
Gypsy Rhythm CD music
$13.49 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences from around the Mediterranean liberally scattered across the sound. Her voice is in glorious form, ...

| | Kidd Jordan Palm Of Soul CD (2006)
Gypsy Rhythm CD music
$13.09 It's all there at the very beginning, thanks to Kidd Jordan, New Orleans' septuagenarian saxophonist, teacher, and leader; drummer Hamid Drake, who, despite leaving the Crescent City decades ago, still understands second-line rhythms; and William Parker, bassist extraordinaire, who plays a startling array of singing bowls, gongs, and even the talking drum on this session. In the 56 seconds that are "Peppermint Falls," the album's opener, all the elements are there, up front, and waiting to peel the layers off the onion of sound. Jordan swings in everything he does, whether it's the lonesome blues singing at the commencement of "Forever" or the startling intensity of "Unity Call." It's about song and sound, the notion of singing through the horn, expressing what the Indian, North African, and Congo shamans have been singing about for centuries. Certainly this is jazz; it lives in a post-Coltrane aesthetic -- the one of discovery, not imitation. The bowed bass beginnings of "Living Peace" suggest, from the relative calm and quiet of the first two tracks, that the edges will become a noticeable present tense in this music. But there are no edges, despite the moan-song of the horn, the bowing and the skeletal inverted notion of time that Drake stretches to its breaking point. What breaks are the defined notions of the pianoless jazz trio. This is a triangle where texture, balance, and color become the points at which sound itself can be expressed without distraction or notional individual identity struggles. This is music that just is, as ...

| | Barefoot Truth Life Is Calling CD (2009)
Gypsy Rhythm album
$10.15 Every now and again a band emerges that grows so quickly that every time you press refresh on their web page, something new seems to be happening. Just one year out of college, Barefoot Truth looks to take on that role. In the blink of an eye the acoustic folk rockers have transitioned from a few shows per month to a full-time, full-fledged touring act. BFT’s ever-changing live show features a wide array of instruments, including upright bass, Weissenborn lap guitar, lead harmonica and didgeridoo, plus a drummer who sings lead vocals. Their studio albums have grown from stripped down optimistic sing-a-longs to the full band environmentally themed songs on their most recent release, “Walk Softly”.“All Good Reasons”, Barefoot Truth’s new single, captures the feeling of change that engulfs the band and with election-day just ahead, much of the country. Close to 5,000 people downloaded the song in the first four ...
