| | Sonata Arctica Silence CD - Import Sonata Arctica Discography of CDs
Sonata Arctica's Silence basically sounds like Europe with the chops of Dream Theater. The record has all the glossy, non-threatening professionalism of '80s-style, pop-based prog metal: soaring, multi-tracked vocals, virtuosic instrumental passages, and clean, airbrushed production polish. Fans of the genre will appreciate Sonata Arctica's commitment to the style. ~ Andy Hinds
Debut from the power metal band from Finland. Spinefarm.
Sonata Arctica: Tony Kakko (vocals, keyboards); Jani Liimatainen (guitar); Mikko Harkin (keyboards); Marko Paasikoski (bass); Tommy Portimo (drums).

$21.19 Special Edition CD includes the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs.
Dream Theater's tenth long-player is about as dense and challenging as any album in the band's discography and emphasizes not only the virtuoso members' stupefying musicianship, but also their most aggressive and thoroughly metallic songwriting tendencies. The sixteen-minute opener "A Nightmare to Remember" quickly establishes this agenda via frequently thrash-paced staccato riffing, some of John Petrucci's most blistering guitar solos ever, and the return of drummer Mike Portnoy's syncopated growls, which provide contrast for singer James LaBrie's soaring melodic elegance. "The Count of Tuscany" is a heady prog-metal magnum ...
| | Insomnium Across The Dark CD (2009)
Silence music CDs
$12.79 Although Sweden and Norway are the first countries that come to mind when one thinks of Scandinavian metal, Finland has turned out to be an impressive player as well--impressive for black metal, impressive for folk metal, impressive for gothic metal, and impressive for death metal. Insomnium have epitomized the melodic side of Finnish death metal and they continue in that vein on ACROSS THE DARK. This 2009 release isn't a radical departure from Insomnium's previous albums, but there is one noticeable difference: this time, they incorporate some clean vocals--which are provided by Jules Näveri (who, in European metal circles, is known for his contributions ...

| | Mastodon Crack The Skye CD (2009)
Silence album
$12.19 Atlanta's Mastodon climbed to the top of the metal heap the old-fashioned way. Taking the template for success etched by Metallica, the band captured the imagination with a series of albums that offered potent heaviness and relentless experimentation. After graduating from respected indie Relapse, they released 2006's acclaimed BLOOD MOUNTAIN, an album with a fire motif/fantasy adventure concept that opened numerous doors both commercially and critically. Their latest, CRACK THE SKYE, completes their elemental cycle by focusing on "ether," while also serving as a tale of czarist Russia. The progressive metal elements that bled into their sound on BLOOD MOUNTAIN are pushed even further here, led once more by Brann Dailor's furiously ...
| | Dokken Tooth And Nail CD (1984)
Silence CD music
$5.99 TOOTH AND NAIL contains some of Dokken's best all-time tracks--especially a pair of rockers that were issued as MTV videos ("Just Got Lucky" and "Into the Fire"). Also featured was the ferocious album-opening title track (proceeded by the short instrumental "Without Warning"), as well as the concert favorite "When Heaven Comes Down." But the album's best track is undoubtedly the aforementioned "Alone Again," a power ballad that helped open the floodgates for other similarly styled songs that would rule the airwaves ...

| | Cher Living Proof CD (2002) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan; Argentina
Silence album
$30.19 "Love One Another" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
In the mercurial world of pop music, there are precious few artists who can truly be labeled survivors; performers who successfully weather changes in times and tastes while managing to reinvent themselves for new generations of fans. From her days with Sonny in the '60s to her divahood at the end of the '90s, Cher is undeniably a survivor. The first single off LIVING PROOF, "Song for the Lonely," attempts to pick up where her mega-hit "Believe" left off, as a simultaneously anthemic and danceable pop confection with an emotional, reach-out message. Similarly, "A Different Kind of Love Song" makes use of the quirky vocal effects that made "Believe" so popular. But amid all the dance material, there's the sorrowful R&B balladry of "Rain, Rain" and the Latin pop ...

| | Haunted One Kill Wonder CD (2003) Bonus Track; Japan
Silence music CDs
$38.19 This Japanese release of the LP includes a bonus song, "Ritual."
"Privation of Faith Inc.," One Kill Wonder's opening instrumental track, overbearingly proves one thing: The Haunted worship at the altar of almighty thrash/speed metal kings Slayer. The clean, arpeggiated main riff swipes the sense of melody and tension from Slayer classic "Dead Skin Mask" and eventually merges into "Godpuppet," a two-minute blast furnace of speed riffing and manic drumming that would provide a nice set of curtains to match Reign in Blood's gore-stained furniture. Which isn't to say the Haunted's third chunk of wax is a blatant ripoff; cherry-picking the best aspects of one's influences and integrating them into such an entertaining, vicious, and well-written album such as One Kill Wonder isn't a crime, and it should be welcomed with open arms by any self-respecting fan of the genre. As expected, several songs, including "Downward Spiral" and the title track, possess the frantic, technical guitar riffery that adorned the finest work of At the Gates (whose former guitarist, Anders Bjorler, gets the majority of songwriting credit here); elsewhere, "Bloodletting" boasts the tense, midtempo groove of mid- to late-period Slayer and the conclusion to "D.O.A." nods to "Raining Blood" with a clashing cavalcade of cat-strangler guitar solos. The album also further separates the Haunted from their Swedish brethren, being too straightforward to be lumped in with the more progressive New Wave of Swedish Death Metal acts (i.e., In Flames, Hypocrisy, Dark Tranquillity, etc.). However, one question begs to be answered about One Kill Wonder: Is there a bad riff or a single wasted moment on the album? Not in the least -- it's lean, mean, and nasty. But there's also a ring of familiarity to it -- overall, it's not a drastic departure from its two brutally concise predecessors, The Haunted and The Haunted Made Me Do It. It's just business as usual, and the killing business is good. ~ John Serba
