Rock Angelz album
$9.58 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing ...
| | Katatonia Night Is The New Day CD (2009)
Rock Angelz CD music
$14.38 The latest album from Swedish doom rockers Katatonia, their first studio effort since 2006, is as moody and beautiful as their other latter-day work. The group's career can be marked in two stages based on the condition of singer Jonas Renske's vocal cords -- basically, after the band's first two albums, he developed health problems that prevented him from performing harsh death growls, and ever since the band has moved in an increasingly melodic direction, even covering songs by Will Oldham and Jeff Buckley. It's unsurprising to learn that Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt helped out by performing the harsh vocals on Katatonia's Brave Murder Day album and Sounds of Decay EP in 1996 and 1997, since Night Is the New Day songs "Foresaker" and "Idle Blood" could be outtakes from that band's Damnation or Blackwater Park. Other tracks like "The Longest Year," the hilariously titled "Onward into Battle" (a song this slow and lush would only inspire soldiers ...
| | Michael Jackson Thriller CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Special Edition
Rock Angelz music CDs
$8.49 The finest example of perfect disco pop, and a record that should be prescribed to musical snobs and manic depressives. The album is a true ambassador of what pop music can be. Jackson whoops and dances through a suite of unforgettable melodies that should be danced to with a smile on your face. Each track offers at least one musical hook, whether it is the beauty of 'Human Nature' (who can resist the 'dada dada da da da') or the 'whoo whoo' of 'Billie Jean'. It's all too good.
Principally recorded at Westlake Audio, Los Angeles, California.

Personnel includes: Michael Jackson (vocals, percussion); Paul McCartney ...

| | Frank Zappa Joe's Garage Acts I, II & III CDs (1979) Remastered
Rock Angelz album
$18.05 The superlative repackaging and remastering undertaken by Ryko has put the original three-part, two-record set of this magnificent nonsense tale together for the first time. This is back to the madness of Freak Out, with more pop and doo-wop bursting through all the complicated stuff, letting you know that Zappa could write a hit single, if he could be bothered to do so. Joe's Garage is a hoot and harmlessly pornographic. The sleeve-note states that it is "a stupid story about how the government is trying to do away with music." It is absolutely no coincidence that throughout, the listener mistakes the "scrutinizer" as the "scrotumizer." Zappa was that rude, and that funny.
Originally released as a 3 LP set.
Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Warren Cuccurullo (vocals, guitar); Denny Walley (vocals, slide guitar); Ed Mann (vocals, percussion); Dale Bozzio, Al Malkin, ...

It's always a sign that a group is hot if they release a holiday album mere months after their debut. That's the case with *NSYNC. Their debut was released in America in late March, and in early December, Home for Christmas hit the shelves. Much of the album is devoted to newer material, with only a handful of songs qualifying as standards: "The Christmas Song," "The First Noel," and "O Holy Night." All of it is given the ...

Rock Angelz album
$22.05 This whopping 81-cut, four-disc box collects the vast majority of master takes Louis Jordan & His Tympani Five recorded for Decca in the 1940s. While it's true that Germany's Bear Family label did a better job by putting together a seven-disc box with alternates and a number of unreleased masters along with an LP of his duets with Ella Fitzgerald, this collection cannot be faulted, especially for the price especially since it also represents Jordan's music from the late ...

| | Charlotte Rae Songs I Taught My Mother CDs (2006)
Rock Angelz music CDs
$14.09 Comic actress Charlotte Rae had achieved a breakthrough the previous year as Mrs. Peachum in the celebrated Marc Blitzstein adaptation of The Threepenny Opera at the Theatre de Lys Off-Broadway when she was signed by Vanguard Records in 1955 to make an album of novelty songs. But she had been in New York for years by then, doing her nightclub act at the Blue Angel, the Village Vanguard, and other clubs, and Songs I Taught My Mother, subtitled "Silly, Sinful & Satiric Selections," was a collection of witty, bawdy, and sophisticated special material that she had assembled for those performances. She called on friends including Blitzstein, who provided the opening number, "Modest Maid," about a character fascinated by lechery, and, from his musical No for an Answer, the frenetic "Fraught." The biggest contributor, however, was Sheldon Harnick (later known as the lyricist for a series of Broadway musicals including Fiddler on the Roof), who was tapped for "Gus the Gopher" and "Merry Little Minuet" (from John Murray Anderson's Almanac), and collaborated with Rae on "Backer's Audition" and "Gabor the Merrier." "Merry Little Minuet" hilariously combined classical music with a caustic view of world affairs, to wit: "The whole world is festering with unhappy souls/The French hate the Germans, the Germans hate the Poles/Italians hate Yugoslavs, South Africans hate the Dutch/And I don't like anybody very much." (The song anticipated Randy Newman's "Political Science" by decades.) Such a number had to be sung perfectly straight for its best effect, but "Backer's Audition" and "Gabor the Merrier" were both broadly acted satires full of winking references to ...
