Complete Viewing Package This movie is one of the best of it's kind.
The story written by one of Scotlands best poets, Robert Louis Stevenson. It had excitment, drama, bravery, loyalty,
endurance and hospitality in a warring time. History, love for country, finding true love in difficult times and the gifts of inheritance.
True to the history of these nations at war and as always, beautifully done by Masterpiece Theatre. Submitted by Liz (Connecticut, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Robert Louis Stevenson's coming-of-age adventure is back--and breathtaking--in this widely heralded Masterpiece Theatre presentation bursting with scoundrels and scallywags, villains and heroines, and two memorable heroes who will stop at nothing in their quest for justice. Attempting to claim his rightful inheritance from his eccentric Uncle Ebenezer, young Davie Balfour is kidnapped and imprisoned in the hold of a slave ship bound for the New World. Soon, Davie joins forces with exiled Highland hero Alan Breck and together, the unlikely pair of outlaw and innocent embark on a treacherous quest across Scotland that will bring them foes to numerous to count, as well as unexpected friends. Newcomer James Anthony Pearson (MONARCH OF THE GLEN) delivers a transforming portrayal of lost innocence as the once-sheltered Davie, while Iain Glen (BEAUTIFUL CREATURES) offers a triumphant performance as the notorious rebel Breck. Rounding out the impressive cast are Adrian Dunbar (THE CRYING GAME, RICHARD III), Paul McGann (HORATIO HORNBLOWER, DR. WHO), Gregor Fisher (LOVE ACTUALLY), and Kirstin Coulter Smith (MY LIFE SO FAR). KIDNAPPED is an action-packed spectacular sure to swashbuckle its way into your heart.

$15.65 Despite his weak eyesight, Rudyard Kipling's son Jack was determined to serve in the military during World War I. Unlike many parents, Kipling was adamant that his son have the opportunity to see action and uphold the values that were a constant motif in his writing. By way of influence Jack finally made it to the front, never to return, and Kipling would spend years of his life trying to uncover his son's fate. This Masterpiece Theatre production is the story of one aspect of the writer's life that was more tragic than anything depicted in his adventure stories. Daniel Radcliffe takes off Harry Potter's robes to star in this serious drama.

Masterpiece Theatre - Kidnapped review
$10.49 French screenwriter and actress Agnès Jaoui's assured directorial debut is a funny, clever, and moving examination of the intertwining love lives and differing cultural standpoints of an unlikely group of men and women. When Castella (Jean-Pierre Bacri), a successful factory owner bored with his workaday life, unwillingly accompanies his shrill, high-strung wife, Angelique (Christiane Millet) to a performance of Racine's BÉRÉNICE, he falls hard for the lead actress, Clara (Anne Alvaro). Meanwhile, during the performance, Castella's chauffeur, Deschamps (Alain Chabat) has a surprise run-in with Manie, (Agnès Jaoui), a bartender with whom he once had a one-night stand. This touches off a discussion about women and sex with Castella's hard-edged bodyguard, Moreno (Gerard Lanvin), who warns Deschamps about his romantic naiveté. Castella's new goal to pursue the intelligent, sophisticated Clara is aided by fate when she becomes his English instructor. Clara, along with her artistic friends, however, is less than enthralled by Castella's tactlessness and lack of culture. At the same time, the soulful Deschamps, cynical Moreno, and cool, carefree Manie enter ...

$14.35 The glimpse afforded by director Mandy Stein's documentary into the world of four Mississippi bluesmen, who comprise the roster of Fat Possum Records, is a testament to a musical era that many consider passed. R.L. Burnside, the late Junior Kimbrough, Cedell Davis, and T-Model Ford, have lived the life commemorated in the music they play; from a lifetime of illness in Davis' case to Burnside's tragic family history, these men epitomize the blues, and relay their experiences here in both interviews and song. The story of Fat Possum's origins as a label founded on a shoestring budget by young white entrepreneur Matthew Johnson, using his college tuition money, is also heard, with intimations of the tension between the white label owners and black musicians. With excellent photography, including rare black and white footage of Burnside dating from 1974, the documentary paints a portrait of the turbulent lives these men have lived against a backdrop of poverty and privation. Testimonials and fascinating anecdotes are offered by such luminaries as Iggy Pop, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, ...

$9.89 Canadian director David Cronenberg, whose impressive oeuvre includes such disparate works as THE DEAD ZONE, THE FLY, DEAD RINGERS, M. BUTTERFLY, and SPIDER, has made what might be the best film of his career with A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. Loosely based on the graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke, the movie stars Viggo Mortensen as Tom Stall, a quiet, easygoing family man who runs a diner in a small Indiana town. But when two dangerous criminals come into the restaurant prepared to wreak havoc, Stall turns hero and shoots them both. After Stall's story is blasted all over the media, Philly mobster Carl Fogaty (an excellent Ed Harris) shows up, claiming that Tom is actually former hit man Joey Cusack--and they've got some important business to finish. While Stall insists that ...
