At Carnegie Hall album Product Description
At Carnegie Hall album by John Coltrane / Thelonious Monk / Thelonious Quartet Monk was released Sep 27, 2005 on the Blue Note (Label) label. On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). At Carnegie Hall songs The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. At Carnegie Hall album Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic and harmonic intricacies that seem to spur Coltrane's saxophone exploration to new heights. The quartet shines on ballads ("Sweet and Lovely"), but the leaders display their best chemistry on the Monk's thorny, uptempo bop numbers. "Evidence" and "Epistrophy," for instance," have Monk adding rhythmic, dissonant punctuation to Coltrane's torrential stream of ideas, creating a thrilling push-pull balance. A superb date, and a must for fans of both artists, AT CARNEGIE HALL captures two of jazz's most important figures working in perfect symbiosis. ...See Full Description

| Two masters at the top of their form Both jazz fans and future jazz fans should be so grateful for the discovery of this recording. Forget the fact that this is two of the jazz masters of all time at the top of their game captured just as their music was to make a dramatic change -- this album is just plain, old fashioned great listening. Buy it, buy it, buy it! By JFARRIS7 (Austin, TX, USA) |
| Tremendous Find A seminal recording of two jazz masters that should be on anyone's desert island discs list. By eporres (New York, NY, USA) |
| Historic Collaboration This CD documents Monk at his height and Trane on the way up. It's fun to hear how each influenced the other. Good to hear more from the infrequently heard Malik and Wilson. For a 50 year old live concert recording, the sound is great. Finally we get something for our tax dollars (originally a Voice of America broadcast) By larrylevy (Dallas, TX, USA) |
| Welcome discovery. It is great that after all these years, a 1957 recording can still be discovered, and in excellent shape. Playing is excellent, and songs - all by Monk - are classics. Line note writers (6!) have gone overboard, particularly Stanley Crouch. [ Why record companies go back to him, I don't know.] Not essential, not a masterpiece, but this is an excellent disc and a nice addition to any Monk or Coltrane collection. | The future of modern jazz.... This remarkable Cd by Monk/Cotrane was recorded in 1957, but it sounds like it was recorded yesterday. There was nothing like it then, and very few live jazz albums that can touch it now. Fifty one years old, and it still sounds five decades ahead of any current jazz band today. It must have been one hell of a night..... By Rob J (Hertfordshire, England) |
