Jack Nicholson, Michael Keaton, and Kim Basinger star. Included are documentary segments, music videos, commentaries, and more. In gloomy Gotham City the caped crusader must engage in a battle-to-the-death with the villainous Joker--a madman orchestrating a wave of crime and murder that has paralyzed the town. During the course of the struggle, Batman learns the truth about his own mysterious past, and the role played by the Joker in shaping his life when he was a boy. Tim Burton's BATMAN, inspired by Frank Miller's graphic novel THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, is a Gothic, Wagnerian treatment of the Batman mythos that explains the origins of Batman (Michael Keaton) and his nemesis, the maniacal Joker (a ripe Jack Nicholson).
Gotham City is a sunless, ominous haven for criminals, held in the corrupt grip of crime boss Carl Grissom (the ever-magnetic Jack Palance), and terrorized by a sadistic vandal and murderer known as The Joker. But it isn't long before a dark, mysterious caped crusader, who goes by the name of BATMAN, is on their trail and trying to thwart their evil doings. In this darkly entertaining retelling of the Marvel comic classic, ace photojournalist Vicki Vale (warmly and sympathetically played by Kim Basinger) is also on the trail--she wants to find out who Batman really is. Based on the popular comic book character created by Bob Kane for DC Comics; the story and tone have nothing in common with the popular TV series of the 1960s. Imaginative special effects and imposing, Gothic architectural sets dominate this visually graphic, stylish film. Keaton gives a brooding performance as the Caped Crusader and his interestingly understated alter-ego Bruce Wane. But is it Nicholson's Joker that steals the show, with his unnerving, brilliantly maniacal portrayal, especially in the context of his twisted relationship with Grissom's gal Alicia (a lanky, disquieting Jerry Hall). Theatrical release: 1989.
It was shot at the Pinewood Studios in England where renowned director Stanley Kubrick shot almost all of his films.
The ad campaign and trailers for BATMAN used no tag lines or clips from the film, but instead merely showed the darkly glowing bat logo on a black background.
The film was based on the DC comics character but was also inspired by Frank Miller's graphic novel THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, which is about a darker, moodier Batman than the traditional character.
BATMAN won an Academy Award for Best Art Direction.
The film was released in the United States on the character's 50th anniversary.
Actor Robin Williams was reportedly considered for the role of The Joker before it was offered to Jack Nicholson.
This was not the first version of BATMAN put on the silver screen: In 1943, Lambert Hilyer directed a 15-episode serialization of the comic strip, followed in 1948 by Spencer Bennet's BATMAN AND ROBIN serial. In 1966, a film based on the 1960s television series was released featuring the show's stars Adam West and Burt Ward.
In Great Britain, the release of this film required the introduction of a new British Board of Film Classification rating, BBFC 12. This rating indicates that children under the age of twelve are not allowed to see the film, even with parental consent.
Linda Henrikson designed the costumes for Kim Basinger's character; Rick Provenzano was Ms. Basinger's hairdresser; Nick Dudman designed the makeup for the Joker.
Estimated budget $30-40 million. Batman Reviews: "...Nicholson keeps things moving higher and higher..."

Batman film
$22.15 In director Tim Burton's sequel to his successful BATMAN (1989), the Caped Crusador (Michael Keaton) is pitted against the demented, ravenous Penguin (Danny DeVito), a pitiful, orphaned psychopathic freak who once went on a baby-killing spree, and a "power" hungry capitalist villain Max Shreck (Christopher Walken). As the two criminals plot to gain domination over Gotham City, BATMAN must plot to stop them.
In the highly stylized BATMAN RETURNS--complete with dark, Gothic architecture and moody lighting--Batman (and his alter-ego Bruce Wayne) is thrown a third enemy, a terrible distraction: Cat Woman (fearlessly and fabulously played by Michelle Pfeiffer). She is the slinky, sharp-clawed alter-ego of Shreck's secretary Selina. Batman must overcome his own dark past, and his present love entanglements, to rid Gotham of it's evil enemies, this time with even more intricately designed sets and tongue-in-cheek humor, making BATMAN RETURNS an action-packed, but darkly fun adventure.
Diane Keaton, Danny DeVito, and Michelle Pfeiffer star. Included are documentary segments, music videos, commentaries, and more.

| | Rushmore DVD (1998)
Batman video
$10.29 Director Wes Anderson's follow-up to the acclaimed BOTTLE ROCKET is a funny, warmhearted, and extremely sharp American response to the English "Angry Young Man" films of the 1960s, right down to its British Invasion soundtrack. Newcomer Jason Schwartzman creates a classic protagonist in Max Fischer, a sophomore at Rushmore Academy. He excels at every extracurricular activity in school, from theater to beekeeping. Gradewise, however, he's failing. He has few friends outside school save for wealthy but depressed industrialist Herman Blume (Bill Murray), father of obnoxious twin boys who also attend Rushmore. Enter Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams), a beautiful young widowed teacher at Rushmore Elementary. While Max is immediately smitten with Miss Cross, she finds comfort in the company of the emotionally frazzled Blume. But Max won't let Blume have Miss Cross without a fight.
Anderson and cowriter Owen Wilson have created a script brimming with oddball humor at the surface, but at its core lies just enough realistic pain and disappointment to create an all-too-rare bittersweet edge, striking a subtle balance that few films ever achieve, and finally giving national treasure Bill Murray the chance to shine like never before. As director, Anderson displays his exceptional talents with careful choices in color palette, effective use of slow motion to comedic effect, and, most important, a brilliant selection of offbeat songs that are integral to the story. Easily one of the finest comedies since THE GRADUATE, RUSHMORE is a monument to brilliant filmmaking.
This 93 minute DVD feature film comedy is about a 10th grad e student who's only concern is winning the affection of a 1st grade teacher at Rushmore Academy.

Batman movie DVD
$20.39 Under threats of death from the ruling Japanese army, a WWII Chinese village cares for a wounded Japanese soldier and a Chinese translator-collaborator. Awaiting the promised rescue mission, the villagers are in a quandary, uncertain whether to free or kill their captives. The New Year passes as botched escapes and assassination attempts pile up. A bold plan is finally devised by the foolhardy Ma Dasan (Jiang Wen) to return the men to the Imperial Army in exchange for wheat. Complications mount, varying in significance from the atom bomb to a horny donkey.
The notion of honor and heroism, reverential in Eastern interpretations of WWII, are skewered in this chaotic black comedy depicting the insanity of war. Shot in black and white, actor-director Jiang Wen's (the lead in RED SORGHUM) daring film ranges in tone from a grave absurdist farce to a solemn cry for peace. China banned the film and reportedly briefly blacklisted Jiang Wen after the controversial film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.
In a part of China under Japanese control during World War II, a villager faces a dilemma.
