This award-winning TV series portrays the lives of a diverse group of talented high school students at New York's School of the Arts as they train hard for careers onstage. All 16 episodes are included. Based on the hit 1980 film by Alan Parker, this show revolved around an ensemble cast of students who attend New York City's High School for the Performing Arts. While struggling with the same problems of teenagers everywhere--including first love, sexuality, alienation, family troubles, and loneliness--the kids also have to try to develop the skills they need to succeed in the cutthroat world of show business. Lydia Grant (Debbie Allen, MONA MUST DIE) is a dance teacher whose emphasis on discipline is tempered by a deeply compassionate side. The students include the outspoken and ambitious Coco (Erica Gimpel), who in the first season competes against Lydia for a part in a show, and Doris (Valerie Landsburg), who features in the first episode as the shy new kid in school. Doris learns to come out of her shell, discovering her talents and her passion, and befriends the sensitive, gay Montgomery (P.R. Paul). Shy, quiet music student Bruno (Lee Curreri) falls in love with Kathleen, later to discover that she has multiple sclerosis, while comedian Danny (Carlo Imperato) has to deal with his father's disapproval of his chosen profession. Fame - The Complete First Season Reviews: "[T]he show sincerely portrayed young artists struggling to discover their talents." -- Grade: B+

| | Wham Make It Big CD (1984)
Fame - The Complete First Season review
$7.59 The title was a promise to themselves, Wham!'s assurance that they would make it big after struggling out of the gates the first time out. They succeeded on a grander scale than they ever could have imagined, conquering the world and elsewhere with this effervescent set of giddy new wave pop-soul, thereby making George Michael a superstar and consigning Andrew Ridgeley to the confines of Trivial Pursuit. It was so big and the singles were so strong that it's easy to overlook its patchwork qualities. It's no longer than eight tracks, short even for the pre-CD era, and while the four singles are strong, the rest is filler, including an Isley Brothers cover. Thankfully, it's the kind of filler that's so tied to its time that it's fascinating in its stilted post-disco dance-pop rhythms and Thatcher/Reagan materialism -- an era that encouraged songs called "Credit Card Baby." If this dichotomy between the A-sides and B-sides is far too great to make this essential, the way Faith later would be, those ...

Fame - The Complete First Season DVD
$5.99 Includes rare 12" dance remixes previously unavailable on CD.
Punk and disco were the major musical innovations of the '70s. No one utilized these sources as shrewdly as Madonna, whose 1983 self-titled debut still sounds sharp 15 years later. A CBGB-era band waif who also loved the N.Y. dance club scene, Madonna Ciccone brought the brash, self-determining ethos of punk rock to the ecstastic melodic lift of Chic-style dance music.
That other N.Y. sex symbol, Debbie Harry of Blondie, also had her biggest hits ("Heart Of Glass," "Rapture") when she flirted with disco and rap, but a winking flirtation ...

| | Divine Bette Midler DVD (2005)
Fame - The Complete First Season video
$10.39 Irrepressible singer, actress, comedian, and all-around star Bette Midler has conquered the worlds of stage, screen, song, and television with her big, brassy voice and larger-than-life personality. Hailing from Honolulu, Hawaii, the diva got her start singing at a gay bathhouse in New York City, where she was accompanied on piano by nascent singer/songwriter Barry Manilow (who also produced her first album). Making her Broadway debut in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, Midler went on to wow audiences with her dramatic starring turn as a drug-addicted singer in the widely acclaimed feature film THE ROSE, which launched a successful acting career that included ...
