Widescreen; Additional Footage; English Soundtrack; Spanish Subtitles; French Subtitles; Dir/Cast Commentary; Dolby Digital 5.1re; 3" Mini Umd DVD Zombie movies slip in and out of fashion, but it's always a special occasion when the man who helped turn the undead into a worldwide phenomenon decides to add an installment to his ongoing saga of flesh-eating films. George A. Romero's zombie movies have all appeared in different decades, beginning with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD in 1968, DAWN OF THE DEAD in '78, and DAY OF THE DEAD in '85. Romero skipped the '90s, but a zombie renaissance in the early 21st century (28 DAYS LATER, SHAUN OF THE DEAD) finds him back in the directors chair.
Often seen as allegories for their times, Romero's films have been connected to societal events such as the consumerism of the '70s (DAWN OF THE DEAD) and the spread of the AIDS virus in the '80s (DAY OF THE DEAD). With 2005's LAND OF THE DEAD, Romero positions the bulk of his story in a giant skyscraper which houses the last humans left on the planet; although his intentions are foggy this time, LAND appears to be Romero's commentary on the post-9/11 political landscape. The zombies only bother crews who venture outside the makeshift city for supplies, but the people are kept sedated by their leader, the irascible Kaufman (Dennis Hopper), who exaggerates their threat. What Kaufman doesn't realize is that the zombies are learning skills they half-remember from their old selves, leading to some impressively blood-soaked scenes of tumult. In an unusual move for Romero, Hopper is joined by name actors such as John Leguizamo and Asia Argento. The film greatly benefits as a result, successfully portraying an atrophied civilization that has regressed to a primitive state, allowing its undead tormentors to sense that a free lunch may be just around the corner. Theatrical Release: June 24, 2005 (NY) George A. Romero's Land Of The Dead Reviews: "This is zombie infestation writ large, hundreds lurching through a nocturnal wasteland, photographed in an impressively desolate palette."
-- Uncut Staff, Uncut "Paradoxically, this is the most hopeful film in the series, in that it presents a genuine movie-style hero in Simon Baker's handsome and compassionate Riley..."
-- Kim Newman, Sight and Sound 3 stars out of 5 -- "[The franchise] sprouts a new one, and a good one....[Argento] comes off like a tatted-up Meg White..."
-- Peter Relic, Rolling Stone "Mr. Romero is one of the great form-givers of the horror genre....The fresh element here is that the zombie underclass has evolved a leader of sorts, who possesses both a sense of historical self-awareness and an ability to use automatic weapons."
-- Dave Kehr, New York Times "[A]n excellent freakout of a movie....One of the enormous pleasures of genre filmmaking is watching great directors push against form and predictability, as Mr. Romero does brilliantly in LAND OF THE DEAD."-- Manohla Dargis, New York Times "[The film] reveals that Romero remains the master of a genre he reinvented."-- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times "[The film] does have an 'old friends' dimension that warms the heart as its familiar-looking zombies eat hearts..."-- Mike Clark, USA Today George A. George A. Romero's Land Of The Dead Video George A. Romero's Land Of The Dead Movie Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Good pilot for a TV series, but nothing else Very disappointed with this movie. I, like many other fans was looking forward to 'Land' ...but oh my god! The movie is neither scary nor tense. At no point do we care very much for the main characters, or the zombies. The zombies themselves are annoying (butcher zombie, girl zombie, bride zombie etc) as Romero groups them together in their nuclear huddle. The end is pure farce as the same dead shuffle back home to the words of Murphy - 'they're just looking for a place called home, same as us. Terrrible, terrible!
Rented/not bought!

George Romero's Best Work This one of the best survival horror movies ever created by George Romero.Taking it from his 1980's classic Day Of The Dead Romero takes the zombies on American Soil where the remaining survivors take refuge in a city. This is a must have DVD. Submitted by aphilsona (Winston Salem, NC USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful. This review is for a different format.
More Brains! (CHOMP! CHOMP!) Hey, so maybe this movie isn't the best zombie movie out there, it's still very good. It's my 2nd favorite George A. Romero zombie flick, right after Dawn Of The Dead. One reviewer asks, since when do zombies think? Well, don't forget Bub from Day of the Dead, that walking puss pile was a zombie brainiac!
This movie is great, I really liked the lead zombie, Big Daddy, and John Leguizamo was good, so was Dennis Hopper, and the rest of the cast as well. It's just a fun, creepy slam-bang zombie-chomping action-fest I give it four CHOMPS! Submitted by Electro Boogie Bot (Southfield, MI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful. Woot old school zombies! This movie was incredible, especially the uncut directors version....I think this is my favorite in the series now! I could just watch it over and over and have! The settings are just great. I mean the opening scene is nicely done and sets the tone. The special effects are good and it has a nice pace with lots of gore in it!:-) It was alittle bit different in the sense, it was not unarmed people locked in a house or mall. It was more like a well armed millitia..lol...but that aside, this movie is just great. Keep em coming george! Submitted by nebulapig (Sarasota, Florida, usa) Was This Review Helpful? George Romero King of the Zombies If you liked Night/Dawn/Day of the Dead you'll love this one. It fits where it would be in the series. The remake of Dawn of the Dead did not measure up. It was too far fetched. This was done by the man who started it all and he does not disappoint you. Buy it at CDUniverse, where else? Besides, your already here right? It is a great follow-up to the previous movies.
