| | Wall Of Voodoo Index Masters CD Wall Of Voodoo Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
The twanging, spaghetti-western ambiance of these pieces perfectly captures the cinematic oddity that was at the heart of Wall of Voodoo's sound, even before you hear singer Stan Ridgway's unique racetrack tout delivery and Jim Thompson-style noir lyrics. THE INDEX MASTERS is an essential document of LA new wave.
Although Wall of Voodoo's artistic masterpiece is 1982's extraordinary concept album CALL OF THE WEST--also known as the one with "Mexican Radio" on it--the Los Angeles art-pop band had previously released both an album, 1981's DARK CONTINENT, and a self-titled EP. THE INDEX MASTERS is an expanded version of that 1980 EP, its six tracks combined with an entire album's worth of previously-unissued early live recordings, a sterling medley of Ennio Morricone's theme from THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY, and Hugo Montenegro's theme from HANG 'EM HIGH. A terrific electro-pop version of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" completes the circle of influences.
Wall of Voodoo: Stan Ridgway (vocals, organ); Marc Moreland (guitar); Bruce Moreland (piano, bass instrument); Chas Gray (synthesizer); Joe Nanini (percussion).

Index Masters album
$6.55 Wall of Voodoo's second full-length album, Call of the West, was a noticeably more approachable work than their debut, Dark Continent, and it even scored a fluke hit single, "Mexican Radio," a loopy little number about puzzled American tourists that's easily the catchiest thing on the album. But while Wall of Voodoo's textures had gotten a bit less abrasive with time, the band's oddball minor-key approach was still a long way from synth pop, and frontman Stan Ridgway's songs were Americana at it's darkest and least forgiving, full of tales of ordinary folks with little in the way of hopes or dreams, getting by on illusions that seem more like a willful denial of the truth the closer you get to them. There's a quiet tragedy in the ruined suburbanites of "Lost Weekend" and the emotionally stranded working stiff of "Factory," and the title song, which follows some Middle American sad sack ...

Index Masters CD music
$23.75 KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD contains 10 bonus tracks and represents everything the band recorded through early 1986, including all of the LOST EP, and the I LOVE MY LEATHER JACKET/THE GREAT ESCAPE 12"
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD, The Chills' 18-track compilation culled from The Chills early and mid-'80s EPs and singles, is highlighted by the song "Pink Frost."
The Chills' Martin Phillipps mixes up melodic pop with elements of garage rock and punk, creating songs with a sweet melancholy all their own. Phillipps has always been the focus of the Chills, writing and singing the band's songs. His group has also rivaled Menudo in its sheer number of personnel changes. In a just world, the Chills would have sold just as many records.
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD showcases the shifting line-ups and many moods of the early to mid-'80s Chills. "Rolling Moon" ...
| | Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads CDs (1982) Bonus Tracks
Index Masters music CDs
$19.19 This live album was originally released as a double LP in 1982, when the Talking Heads were still extremely active. Twenty-two years later, the bonus-laden, two-CD reissue serves as a fascinating in-concert document of the phases the band went through during its first five years. The late-'70s tracks on the first disc show the early version of the band in all its geeky glory, mixing spastic New Wave quirkiness, funk rhythms, and art-school lyrics. It's intriguing to hear the difference between some of the songs' inception and their eventual recorded versions, such as a relatively straightforward "Electricity (Drugs)," which would turn ominous and atmospheric on FEAR OF MUSIC.
The second disc captures the expanded, early-'80s version of the band, with extra musicians and backing vocalists in tow, tackling the fugue-like ...
| | Electric Light Orchestra A New World Record - Expanded Edition CD (1976) Bonus Tracks; Remastered

$7.59 Also available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY.
1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW ...
