Kenny Barron: Kenny Barron (piano); Ray Drummond (double bass); Ben Riley (drums). Bradley's was a legendary New York City jazz club that for 25 years acted as a gathering place for many of the Big Apple's top musicians, a place to hang out. In 1996, the Kenny Barron Trio dug in before the illustrious audience and played at their best. Barron and drummer Ben Riley were members of Sphere, a quartet (with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse and bassist Buster Williams) that initially paid tribute to Thelonious Monk. On this trio set, "The Only One" is based on Monk's "Hackensack," Barron takes Thelonious' "Shuffle Boil" as an unaccompanied piano solo, and the threesome jams on "Well You Needn't." The other two songs, the standard "You Don't Know What Love Is" and Barron's "Twilight Song," are not connected to the pianist-composer but are excellent examples of the trio's close interplay and ability to think as one. Barron, bassist Ray Drummond, and Riley had already had a long history together, in groups with Bill Barron, Stan Getz, and Gary Bartz in addition to being independent. The familiarity shows, as does their desire to avoid being predictable. The results are easily recommended. ~ Scott Yanow Perfect Set: Live At Bradley's 2 Music Kenny Barron Perfect Set: Live At Bradley's 2 Songs | 1. | House Introductions | |

$17.19 Few back catalogs have been treated with such little respect as that of the wonderful SHANGRI-LAS. Despite the quality of their material - which remains highly collectable - they've suffered a history of badly compiled albums with shoddy packaging and more to the point appalling sound reproduction. RPM have produced a vastly improved sound quality collection before but are now able to go even one better by introducing the true stereo versions of their key recordings. In addition RPM are adding both sides of the hideously rare debut single from the group in turn making its debut on CD. The packaging is in digipack format as part of RPMs Special edition series containing a dynamic new front cover, new photographs and liner notes.
Liner Note Author: Mick Patrick. Arrangers: Sal DiTroia; Shadow Morton; Bob Bateman; Leroy Glover; Artie Butler. The Shangri-Las were the quintessential girl group and MYRMIDONS OF MELODRAMA is the quintessential Shangri-Las collection. This 33-track set contains all of the trio's key songs-- including "Out in the Streets," "Train from Kansas City," Give Him a Great Big Kiss," and, of course, that ode to bad boys and the women who love them, "Leader of the Pack"--as well as classic radio spots and even dating tips from lead singer Mary Weiss. While the disc is certainly a showcase for Weiss's gorgeous, haunting lilt, it's also a fitting tribute to Shadow Morton, one of the most overlooked producers of the 1960s. Morton took teenage melancholy and created its sonic equivalent, making everything sound like it was recorded with the lights out so no one could see the tears. More than simply a pop confection, the Shangri-Las, in retrospect, embody a long-lost zeitgeist: these are the misunderstood bad girls who smoked ...
