Although Prestige was primarily known as a jazz label, they did host some superb blues artists, including the brilliant, idiosyncratic Texas guitarist Lightnin' Hopkins. Hopkins was only with Prestige for a spell in the early 1960s, but this excellent 16-track collection skims the cream from his output for the label. Featured in both solo and group settings, Hopkins lays down his inimitable sparse, country-blues guitar style, not to mention his legendary ability to improvise wry, comic stories.
Personnel: Lightnin' Hopkins (vocals, guitar); Billy Bizor (vocals, harmonica); Sonny Terry (harmonica); Buster Pickens (piano); Leonard Gaskin, Donald Cooks (bass instrument); Belton Evans, Spider Kilpatrick, Herb Lovelle (drums).

| | J J Jackson But It's Alright CD (1967)
Prestige Profiles songs
$9.95 Soul belter J.J. Jackson is best known for his 1967 smash, "But It's Alright," but he has some fine singles and a couple of excellent albums as well, and 1967's But It's Alright on the Calla label is one of them. Kicking off with the infectious title track, the record alternates between flat-out rockers like "I Dig Girls," "Come See Me (I'm Your Man)" (which was written by Jackson, covered by the Pretty Things, and then reclaimed powerfully here), and "Boogaloo Baby," midtempo groovers like "You've Got Me Dizzy" and "The Stones That I Throw," and ballads like "Try Me" and ...

| | B B King Mr. Blues/Confessin' The Blues CD (2005) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Prestige Profiles CD music
$18.79 This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963). Based on the results, the artist was being presented as a blues shouter, supported by an antiquated big band and/or orchestra. Arguably the best of the lot comes from the Maxwell Davis led ensemble on the first ...

Prestige Profiles CD music
$13.39 Calvin Owens has been leading big bands for decades, touring in support of B.B. King until forming his own group in the mid-'80s. But the trumpeter's music draws from a number of styles. Owens shines with his heartfelt trumpet in "Mistreat a Good Man." "I Gotcha Hootchie Mama," a vocal feature for Gloria Edwards (which she co-wrote with arranger Nelson Mills), has a Cajun flavor with the presence of accordion player Robert Ludd, Jr. Trombonist Aubrey Tucker wrote and arranged the loping "So Blue and All Alone," a bluesy ballad with fine solos by the composer and the bandleader. The band shows off its gospel roots with a spirited take of "This Little Light of Mine," with an understated vocal by ...

Prestige Profiles music CDs
$18.25 The Los Angeles Times calls Eastern Blok’s music “relentlessly innovative work.” Downbeat Magazine claims that “the ensemble playing is often breakneck and consistently challenging.” Acoustic Guitar Magazine raves that Eastern Blok plays with “blazing virtuosity and sheer beauty.” After performing over 100 shows a year and selling thousands of records, the band formerly known as The Goran Ivanovic Group has recorded a new album, changed their name, and has been successfully packing venues throughout the country since the release of their self-titled debut album in 2005. Eastern Blok’s “extraordinary pan-cultural ensemble effortlessly ...
