Founded in 1975 by record dealer Ted Carroll, former Horslips manager Roger Armstrong, and industry vet Trevor Churchill, Britain's Ace Records -- its name borrowed from producer Johnny Vincent's legendary American label -- reigns among the world's most ambitious and rewarding reissue imprints, restoring to print untold numbers of long-lost R&B, soul, and rock & roll classics overlooked by major labels in their rush to endlessly repackage the same shopworn hits. One of four anniversary compilations issued in celebration of Ace's 30th birthday, this 20-track compilation spotlights the label's impressive catalog of mid-'60s garage rock nuggets, and though a budget-line, self-congratulatory release, it's also an uncommonly effective and entertaining overview of post-Beatles rock & roll at its most infectious and galvanizing, forgoing the tried-and-true hits to uncover the stomping, slashing sounds bubbling out of the basements, roller rinks, and garages of suburban America. Highlights include the Sonics' "Have Love, Will Travel," the Last Word's "Sleepy Hollow," the Bugs' "It's About Time," and She's "Outta Reach." ~ Jason Ankeny
Some of the best screechin', wailin', down'n'dirty garage punk from the vaults of Ace, spanning a good 40 years worth of rockin'. Includes The Sonics, The Wailers (not the reggae ones), Oxford Circle, She, the Zombies (yes, those Zombies), The Damned, The Milkshakes, Naz Nomad And The Nightmares, The Delmonas and the Prisoners among others. 2005. GRAYFOLDED is a massively overdubbed sound collage based around the Grateful Dead's epic "Dark Star," a prime vehicle for the band's free-form improvisations. It is culled from over fifty different live performances of the song, combined and reassembled through studio-ace John Oswald's "Plunderphonics" techniques.
(August 11, 2004 / TORONTO) John Oswald's FONY label has decided to reissue the critically and popularly acclaimed 2CD Grateful Dead plunderphonic GRAYFOLDED. Out of print since June 2000, the 2004 edition (10th year anniversary) features exclusive background info and interviews with Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, and Robert Hunter plus 2 "time maps" which chart the source Dark Stars used and a 10,000 word essay by musicologist Rob Bowman. Gary Lambert, editor of the Grateful Dead Almanac said : "The decade-leaping GRAYFOLDED is an astonishingly accurate evocation of that sublime, hallucinatory 'unstuck in time' feeling one gets at a really good Grateful Dead show." "This double CD, lasting almost two blissful hours, has been rightly acclaimed as the ultimate Dark Star, the one you always hoped the Dead would one day get around to playing." - The London Daily Telegraph"Even casual Dead fans will be floored by this astonishing new project. Absolutely brilliant." - John Sakamoto, Toronto Sun, album of the decade "Oswald shoots fearless high voltage into this Grateful Frankenstein." - Milo Miles, The Village Voice There is in the Grateful Dead repertoire a song so legendary as to often be referred to as "IT" by dedicated dead heads. The Dead have been playing this song in concert sporadically for a quarter of a century now, often using it as a vehicle for ...

Ace 30th Birthday Celebration: Garage Rock & Punk
$15.05 The Residents have remixed their first album from 1971, the never released Warner Bros. Album. The Warner Bros. Album was the group's first demo tape. They mailed it anonymously (they didn't have a name yet) to Harve Halverstadt at Warner Brothers. Halverstadt was chosen because he had worked with Captain Beefheart, one of the group's musical heroes. The tape was returned with a rejection addressed to 'Residents, 20 Sycamore St., San Francisco'. This, of course, gave the group their name, which first appeared as 'The Residents Uninc.', a fictional musical organization. The Residents maintain that Halverstadt made the right decision, but the place of the Warner Bros. Album in Residential history is assured not only because of the role it played in the naming of the band. Euroralph/Germany. 2005.
Not that the Residents' discography is that easy to sort through in the first place, but here's a release where things become particularly confusing. Back in 1971, they recorded an album (actually, before they were officially the Residents) and sent it anonymously and unsolicited to Harve Halverstadt at Atlantic Records based on his association with noted musical outsider Captain Beefheart. Of course, the tape was rejected and returned to the band, care of "Residents, 20 Sycamore St., San Francisco," thus giving the band their famously anonymous moniker. But despite the future "success" of the Residents, the album remained ...
