Joe Locke was invited to join Milt Jackson's former rhythm section (pianist Mike LeDonne, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Mickey Roker) for an engagement at Smoke in New York City that served as a tribute to the late vibraphonist. They gelled as a group and promptly booked a week at Ronnie Scott's in London, where this CD was recorded, primarily utilizing repertoire drawn from the rhythm section's days backing Jackson. Locke's blues-inflected solo in the opener, "The Prophet Speaks," and his playfulness in "Opus de Funk" are complemented by LeDonne's light touch on electric piano. Two of the charts come from Jackson's partnership with the late Ray Brown. Brown's soulful scoring of Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love" adds a tense vamp at the end of each chorus, while Locke and LeDonne (back on grand piano) dig into Brown's hard bop vehicle "Used to Be Jackson." In addition to enjoyable treatments of a pair of standards, LeDonne contributed the soulful "Rev-elation" and Locke the sauntering "Big Town." Cranshaw and Roker provide terrific support throughout the disc. This intimate live recording gives the listener a front row table at this London nightclub. ~ Ken Dryden
Revered by musicians and fans alike, Milt Jackson was one of the most soulful, yet modern, jazz artists of the second half of the 20th century. Joe Locke, a vibist whose technical proficiency is matched only by his versatility, meets Jackson's last worki

| | Eric Alexander Battle: Live At Smoke CD (2005)
Rev-Elation CD music
$13.85 Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander and alto saxophonist Vincent Herring pair up for two nights of fireworks at Smoke on this 2005 release. Unlike the various two-tenor battles that have appeared on numerous releases over the decades, the contrast provided by featuring two different reeds is easier on one's ears. The furious take of "Blues Up and Down" (penned by the two-tenor team of Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt) is a long workout starting ...

| | Eric Alexander It's All In The Game CD (2006)
Rev-Elation songs
$14.29 Over the dozen years since his debut recording as a leader, Eric Alexander has developed into one of the most important tenor saxophonists of his generation. Joined once again by one of his favorite pianists, Harold Mabern, along with bassist Nat Reeves and drummer Joe Farnsworth, Alexander kicks off this studio affair with a gritty hard bop treatment of "Where or When." "It's All in the Game" dates from the early part of the 20th century (written by future Vice President Charles Dawes), yet this is hardly a dated melody, as Alexander gives his best with a lush ballad treatment, while Mabern (who suggested the tune) incorporates ...

| | Pharoah Sanders Heart Is A Melody CD (1982)
Rev-Elation music CDs
$10.69 This Evidence CD is a reissue of a Theresa LP, adding two songs ("Naima" and "Rise 'n' Shine") to the original program. Pharoah Sanders is heard at his best on a 22-minute version of "Olé," where the tenor really gets a chance to stretch out. His "vocal" on "Goin' to Africa" is spirited, but otherwise most of his solos are very much in the tradition of John Coltrane. There are some fiery moments ...
