Personnel: Wallace Roney (trumpet); Wallace Roney; Antoine Roney (soprano, bass clarinet, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Geri Allen (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); Adam Holzman (Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); Matthew Garrison (acoustic bass, electric bass); Eric Allen (drums); Bobby Thomas, Jr. (percussion); Val "Gelder" Jeanty (turntables). Liner Note Author: Bill Milkowski. Recording information: Sony Studios, New York, NY (05/28/2005). Photographer: Gene Martin. Upon first listen to trumpeter Wallace Roney's Mystikal one might be inclined to marginalize it as yet another attempt to re-create '70s-era Miles Davis. This would be a mistake. While Roney has always owed a large debt to the iconic jazz innovator -- he even played with Davis on a concert released as Miles & Quincy Live at Montreux -- Mystikal is a modern album made up of vintage parts. Which is to say that while Roney has deep affection for the sounds of '60s jazz and '70s funk and fusion, he is a resolutely forward-thinking musician who borrows from a variety of sources and time periods even when the overall sound is funky. Featuring his longtime working band including pianist Geri Allen, brother saxophonist Antoine Roney, keyboardist Adam Holzman, bassist Matt Garrison, drummer Eric Allen, percussionist Bobby Thomas, Jr., and turntablist Val Jeanty, Roney has largely crafted a sister album to 2004's similarly minded Prototype. Like that album, Mystikal is in many ways a standard jazz album with some original compositions, a cover of a standard, and a lesser known piece by a well-known artist. This time around that artist is Wayne Shorter, whose "Atlantis" kicks off the album. An expansive and creepily funky piece off Shorter's underrated 1985 album of the same name, Roney turns the song into a moody mix of Miles in the Sky-esque post-bop, '80s hip-hop, and new age atmospherics. Similarly engaging is his melancholy cover of the Temptations classic "Just My Imagination," which draws out the deeper, more sanguine harmonics of the song even while it perfectly embodies the innocent romance of the original. Interestingly, Roney makes room for some straight-ahead but no less adventurous stuff here covering trumpeter Kenny Dorham's jaunty "Poetic" as well as ending with pianist Bud Powell's gorgeous ballad "I'll Keep Loving You." Roney's own compositions do not disappoint either with the hard funk of "Stargaze" and the elegiac "Baby's Breath" displaying the trumpeter's deft creative vision. ~ Matt Collar
JazzTimes (p.101) - "One of Roney's more compelling qualities comes in the way he utilizes elements...basic funk riffs, clavinet, electric piano -- to keep the fire burning rather than smoothing down the melodic potential. Wallace Roney Mystikal Songs Mystikal Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Wallace Roney - Mystikal It doesn’t take much listening (of this album) to understand that Wallace Roney is a searching musician. Roney roams through several genres and styles in this album, ranging from traditional acoustic duets, to electronica, to reggae. That being said, I would really be hard pressed to consider this album a single work; but, would rather think it a collection of individual works that are more chronilogically associated than anything else.
The first song (Atlantis), and one of the best lead-off tracks I have heard in a long time, maximizes the jazz idiom of “tension and release” with various forms and riffs loosely combining to come together as one great track. From there Roney dabbles in various styles, most notably to myself “Just my imagination” which underscores Roney’s superb approach to the apposing forces of experimentation and honouring traditional jazz styles. As the album continues Roney’s musical vision and talent are show cased with an unrelenting frequency, giving me a lasting impression of what it was that Miles Davis most likely saw in this man. Also worth noting, was the stylistically succinct and technically brilliant work of the vastly under-rated Antoine Roney on saxophones.
For any musician or fan who has given up on the tradition-saturated and sometimes boring North American jazz scene, or to anyone committed to being a part of Jazz’s constantly evolving present, this CD is a must have. To those listeners who prefer to snap their fingers to compiled re-releases of jazz masters come and gone, this CD may be a bit taxing at times. But all-in-all I think in a few years, this will be an album looked upon with great reverence.

| | John Coltrane One Up, One Down: Live At The Half Note CDs (2005) Remastered
Mystikal
$18.95 Live Recording
Personnel: John Coltrane (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Alan Grant (spoken vocals); McCoy Tyner (piano); Jimmy Garrison (double bass); Elvin Jones (drums). ONE DOWN, ONE UP: LIVE AT THE HALF NOTE, recorded in the last year of the classic quartet's existence, captures John Coltrane, drummer Elvin Jones, pianist McCoy Tyner, and bassist Jimmy Garrison going full blast. Recorded a year after A LOVE SUPREME, Coltrane was already moving on to extended improvisation, stretching out a single composition for 15 or 20 minutes while deconstructing it from every conceivable angle, turning his saxophone into an instrument of relentless exploration. The dramatic, spiraling inventions of Tyner lend a frenetic element to Coltrane's already intense lines, while Jones and Garrison find and rearrange nearly every rhythm and counter-rhythm imaginable. ...

Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. More importantly, this band -- which also included drummer ...

| | Kalako Pro CD (2006)
Mystikal
$9.35 Atlanta’s own, Kalako (by way of Anniston, Alabama), is an underground hype-xpert who is not only giving the South something to be proud of, but he is giving the world of Hip-Hop something to think about. His lyrics keep it gansta, and make no mistake - Kalako is one of the "trillest" rappers in the game. Kalako’s radio single, Monkey Roll, won 2nd place on American Idol Underground out of over 600 songs. The Music Industry will not have to wait for Kalako's 17-track full-length CD to drop to hear his prolific verses. Kalako's debut album which is entitled (of course) The Pro, and is scheduled for release on Halloween, 2006. Featuring an edgier, too-hot for radio, club-banger, Monkey Roll (Cash Money Mix), which is co-produced by Cash Money Records own Deezle, The Pro will become the next great rap album destined to develop into a true classic among true Hip-Hop heads and music lovers alike. Kalako is not just serving up the same ol' beats with one line, repetitive hooks, but head-noddin' cuts that have real music laced with Kalako's incomparable and uncompromised flow. Kalako's ...
