Talent, dedication & the right attitude to really go places Playing Time - 45:51 -- The Cherryholmes’ pendulum of repertoire swings from Bill Monroe (“Tallahassee”) to the Dirt Band (“Workin’ Man”), and Hazel Dickens (“Workin’ Girl Blues”) to the Louvin Brothers (“No One to Sing for Me”). Karen Rochelle’s “He Goes to Church” imparts a powerful message that it’s never too late to pursue salvation. So there are influences from old-time mountain, bluegrass, classic country and Gospel sounds. Their original songs are equally varied, with inspiration that covers the traditional music map. Twin fiddles and the bouncing ¾-beat give “Heart as Cold as Stone” a definitive Monroesque feeling, while “Makin’ Time” is an uptempo and catchy song that could’ve been covered by Jimmy Martin before his death. “Will I Be the Winner?” and “Brand New Heartache” have classic country sensibilities. Jeff Taylor’s whistle and accordion are added into the mix on the Celtic-flavored medley of some more originals, “Shelly in the Heather” and “Linda’s Reel.”
Thematically, they clearly understand the roots of the music when they compose and present a nicely-arranged song like “Red Satin Dress,” a murder ballad that only slightly suffers from the vocals not being as high and lonesome as we’re used to in such numbers. While there are many lead vocalists in this family band, Cia Leigh Cherryholmes is the most expressive and evocative on a straightforward original like “Don’t Fall in Love.” Among very stiff competition, she garnered a first round nomination as IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year. As a unit, all six band members sing a cappella on the album closer. Besides their impressive songwriting and singing, The Cherryholmes demonstrate consummate instrumental skills that certainly belie their ages. “Coastline” is a fiery and frenetic tune that swirls like its inspiration, the hurricanes of 2004. Guests Ricky Skaggs (mandolin) and Ben Isaacs (harmony vocals) appear on one track apiece. Isaacs produced the project.
Based in Arizona, the hard-working Cherryholmes range from 13-year-old fiddling Molly Kate on up to the bass-playing patriarch of the unit, Jere. The other kids, Cia, B.J., and Skip, masterfully play banjo, fiddle and guitar, respectively. Their home-schooling mother, Sandy, plays mandolin. Since 2002, the Cherryholmes have been performing music full time (over 250 shows a year) and traveling extensively. They have the talent, dedication and the right attitude to really go places. Purchase Cherryholmes CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Ralph Stanley Back To The Cross CD (1992)
Cherryholmes
$12.59 Like Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley maintained his skills and spirit into the 1990s, still singing and picking classic bluegrass. He joined Freeland in 1992, and appropriately made his label debut a gospel session with the Clinch Mountain Boys. You wouldn't expect any surprises, and there weren't any; nor were there low points. The CD contained 12 wonderful renditions of traditional hymns and praise songs performed with the humility, grace and down-home artistry that has always characterized Ralph Stanley's music. ~ Ron Wynn

| | Rhonda Vincent Storm Still Rages CD (2001)
Cherryholmes
$14.55 After spending several years languishing in Nashville, Rhonda Vincent made an unusual career move: she returned to bluegrass and recorded Back Home Again for Rounder in 2000. Garnering positive responses from critics and fans, Vincent knew she had made the right move. A cross between traditional and contemporary bluegrass, The Storm Still Rages features superb accompaniment and a handful of well-chosen songs. Vincent has also penned or co-penned several of the songs, including the opening cut, "Cry of the Whippoorwill." Her expressive vocal on the heartbreaker "Don't Lie" is lovingly underlined by Stuart Duncan's fiddle and Bryan Sutton's mandolin. Bassist Darrin Vincent, Rhonda's brother, adds harmony on a number of cuts, perfectly bringing each chorus into focus. There's a nice version of "I'm Not Over You," the song that inspired the album's title, with guest Rob Ickes on the Resophonic guitar, and a bluesy take on Hank Williams' "My Sweet Love Ain't Around." Although the arrangements vary quite a bit from song to song, banjoist Tom Adams and guitarist Sutton provide a steady base to work from. Complaints? Only that certain old-hoary classics like "Drivin' Nails in My Coffin" clash with Vincent's attractive vocals. It may be difficult for the listener to believe that this pretty voice is halfway to the grave from drinking rotgut. This aside, The Storm Still Rages should allow Vincent to take her place beside contemporary bluegrass alumni like Alison Krauss and Laurie Lewis. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

| | Alexis Korner Kornerstoned: Anthology 1958-1983 CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Cherryholmes
$24.79 While MUSICALLY RICH...AND FAMOUS documents the second half of British blues godfather Alexis Korner's career, KORNERSTONED adopts a more comprehensive approach, following the pioneering singer/guitarist from the very beginning of his musical life, all the way through every subsequent phase of his development. So we get not only his mid-1960s work with burgeoning blues-rock giants like Paul Rodgers and Steve Marriott, but also his `50s skiffle recordings (basically the British version of jug-band music) with the Ken Colyer band and his own skiffle group, and even an early acoustic guitar duel with famed fingerpicker Davey Graham on "3/4 A.D." Over the course of its two discs, this collection examines pretty much every aspect of this seminal bandleader's historic career.
Gravel-voiced Alexis Korner is arguably the most important figure in the history of British blues - the inspiration for several generations of star musicians, from The Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin & beyond. This first-ever full-career retrospective spans everything from mid-50s skiffle to his final blues outings, via groundbreaking 60s R&B & his pop hits with CCs in the 70s. Two CD set. Castle. 2005.

| | Cherryholmes II: Black And White CD (2007)
Cherryholmes
$9.79 Cherryholmes may be an unusual name for a family-based bluegrass outfit, but one listen to the clan's watertight harmonies and sizzling instrumental talent immediately makes any questions about the name moot. Fronted by Chia Cherryholmes, whose angelic voice is reason enough to pick up II, the group lays down a satisfying brand of American roots that has one foot in the past and one in the present. Blending progressive and traditional strains, and boasting an abundance of strong, original material (also written by Chia), CHERRYHOLMES II seems like nothing less than a modern-day version of classic family bluegrass groups like the Carter Family and the Louvin Brothers.

| | Joe Ely Live At Antone's CD (2000)
Cherryholmes
$14.55 Ever since he made his debut with the legendary Flatlanders in the early '70s, Joe Ely has been a charter member of the Lubbock Mafia--a band of renegade singer-songwriters whose ranks include Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. For all his talents as a gifted composer, Ely's talents truly shine through in a live setting (just ask the Clash and Bruce Springsteen, who've toured or shared a stage with the Texan).
Throughout his career, Ely has always incorporated Tex-Mex flavor into his music, as is apparent throughout LIVE @ ANTONE'S. Aided by flamenco guitarist Teye and accordion player Joel Guzman, Ely infuses sweeping Latino nuances all over numbers like Tom Russell's "Gallo del Cielo" and his own "Nacho Mama."
Elsewhere, this Texan and his crack back-up band fill the rest of their set with tales begging to me made into films, such as Ely's fictional escapades with an outlaw (a sweeping "Me And Billy The Kid") and a Lone Star version of Romeo and Juliet (the two-steppin' "Ranches And Rivers"). Also noteworthy are electrifying covers of Robert Earl Keen ("The Road Goes On Forever"), Gilmore ("Dallas"), Butch Hancock ("Road Hawg") and Buddy Holly ("Oh Boy!").
Recorded live at Antone's Roadhouse, Austin, Texas.
Ely Band: Joe Ely (vocals, acoustic guitar); Teye (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Jesse Taylor (guitar); Lloyd Maines (steel guitar, background vocals); Joel Guzman (accordion); Gary Herman (bass, background vocals); Rafael O'Malley Gayol (drums, percussion).
| | Kim & Reggie Harris Rock Of Ages CD (2000)
Cherryholmes
$18.99 Kim and Reggie Harris return with the anticipated follow-up to 1999's critically acclaimed "Guide My Feet."The folk duo has worked to create a stunning album of depth, social vision and joyous celebration of the human spirit. "Rock of Ages" has a more contemporary feel than previous Harris CDs, with seven of the songs on the CD written by Reggie. Standout tracks include "Crack in the Wall," about the rise of violence in America, "The Stars that Didn't Shine," about baseball's "Negro Leagues," and the humorous but useful "Passive Restraint," an ode to car seatbelts that was aired on National Public Radio's "Car Talk" program. The Harrises have always featured African-American gospel influences in their music (their best-known CD, "Steal Away: Songs of the Underground Railroad," contained many black spirituals), and "Run Mary Run," "Eyes on the Prize" and "Get On Board" fill this CD's quota.Longtime interpreters of songs of the late Phil Ochs, the Harrises include "Too Many Martyrs," written by Ochs and the late Bob Gibson, about the murder of Medgar Evans, a pivotal event in the civil rights movement. Kim and Reggie have been performing together for over 25 years. They bring their astounding vocal talents, both solo and in harmony, to a wide variety of traditional, contemporary and original material.Deeply committed to social activism, the Harrises have been featured in performances at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Smithsonian Institute, Philadelphia Folk Festival and concert stages around the world. They have also been featured on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition and the CBS television program , "An American Christmas." Appleseed is proud to present this recording by Kim and Reggie Harris --wonderful musicians, friends, and steadfast proponents of social change through music.

| | Merle Haggard Live At Billy Bob's Texas CD (1999)
Cherryholmes
$13.99 Don Markham (saxophone, trumpet, background vocals); Eddie Curtis (bass); Randy Mason (drums); Theresa Lane Haggard, Bonnie Owens (background vocals).
Recorded live at Billy Bob's Texas, Fort Worth, Texas. Includes liner notes by Bill Mack.
Longtime Hag fans who pine for Merle's salad days and bemoan the quality of his recent recordings compared to the grandeur of his classic '60s albums have reason to rejoice. This live album captures the late-'90s Merle in concert, a mode in which he has always excelled. Most of the cuts included here are ones that made Haggard famous--hard-drinkin' honky-tonk anthems like "Swinging Doors" and "The Bottle Let Me Down" as well as heartfelt ballads such as "Silver Wings."
As he got older, Merle indulged his jazz leanings more and more, investing his lyrics with swinging, understated phrasing that made George Jones sound like Ernest Tubb. Thus, the older, jazzier Merle's takes on these old tunes offer a fresh perspective. Merle's approach here is echoed by the Western Swing-style trumpet and pedal steel solos that dominate the tunes' instrumental sections. The presence of monster guitarist Red Volkaert--who's absorbed every note of Merle's recorded canon and plays like he exited the womb with Telecaster in hand--serves to remind that Haggard's roots are still in honky-tonk.
