| | Jimi Hendrix Live At Woodstock CDs (1999)
Sounds Of Crime music CDs
$14.89 Recorded live at the Woodstock Festival, Bethel, New York on August 18, 1969. Includes liner notes by David Fricke.
Jimi Hendrix was the headliner at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. Ironically, he got to go on around dawn on Monday morning, by which time there were only (...only) 60,000 remaining parishoners--the last act. Hendrix's Gypsy Sun & Rainbows emerged from a communal summer of jamming in the upstate arts community, but these other musicians are largely inauidble. So what we have in WOODSTOCK is a high energy test flight of Hendrix's last two touring trios, featuring Experience-drummer Mitch Mitchell and Jimi's old Army buddy, the groove oriented Fender bassist, Billy Cox.
Following hot on the heels of the acclaimed BLUES, this second gem from the Hendrix archives finds Hendrix in transition: from a rock and pop approach, to Sky Church music--Jimi's free form synthesis of blues, modal jazz, funk and ethnic sources. An early arrangement of "Hear My Train A-Comin'," and such old warhorses as "Red House" and "Voodoo Child" are given spirited blues treatments. Following ...

| | First Time: The Best Of Surface CD (2001)
Sounds Of Crime album
$6.25 Although they had a number of R&B hits during the late '80s, Surface didn't cross over into the pop mainstream in any notable way. They scraped the bottom reaches of the charts a few times, but they never had a breakout hit that would establish them as stars. Listening to Columbia/Legacy's definitive retrospective The First Time: The Best of Surface, it's possible to hear why they didn't break out -- they simply didn't have a song that would break them big. That doesn't mean that they were a bad group, since they were very competent within their genre and several hits here are very pleasant late-'80s urban cuts, either on the ballad or dance side. But there's nothing particularly striking, nothing with a hook that would send the band soaring up the pop charts. Still, if you happen to be a fan, either of the group or of this sound, this is a pleasing listen, and a very representative overview of what Surface achieved. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Miss Kittin Radio Caroline Vol. 1 CD (2003)
Sounds Of Crime music CDs
$14.49 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Miss Kittin.
Some listeners have always suspected that Caroline Herve's Euro-princess persona, Miss Kittin, was a bit of an act. But as her detached vocal delivery has become more and more ubiquitous, it is exceedingly difficult to tell where the character ends and the real person begins. With her first stateside mix CD, Herve finally tears down the facade, proving that she is much more than the champagne-toasting chanteuse that her sensual accent and fashionista lyrics have always suggested. Granted, Miss Kittin continues the practice of speaking over the tracks, offering challenges such as, "How can you be a DJ if you don't shake your ass in the middle of the ground?," but following an opening statement about her life and family, Herve has already informed listeners of which voice she is using to speak. Almost as a side effect, Herve also proves that she is a wicked DJ, easily blending hiccupping beats by IDM operators Autechre and Pan sonic into subdued house rhythms compliments of Blaze. Click-stepping German minimalism, hyperspace Detroit techno-electro, and even languid trip-hop beats all deftly come together with precise manipulation that few DJs would ever have the nerve to pull off. As the title says, Radio Caroline is a far more esoteric and complicated musical place than the sleek electro-trash ghetto where Miss Kittin is usually placed. The only concession made ...
