$7.95 New Orleans trombone man Kid Ory had already made a sizeable contribution to musical history before he dropped out of the game in the 1930s. Although he basically wrote the rulebook on the use of trombone in a jazz context, he might have slipped off the radar of history if he hadn't made a stunning comeback in the '40s. Thankfully, Ory recorded prolifically throughout the '40s and '50s, and these mid-'50s sessions find him in excellent form. The fare is sprightly old-school New Orleans jazz, sprinkled with ragtime and Dixieland flavors, with Ory's tailgate trombone leading the way.
Interestingly, the personnel here comes from all over the map, and includes Ory contemporaries (drummer Minor Hall), ...

$13.05 It's hardly surprising that this Hawaiian-born ukulele master so impressed Béla Fleck that the jazz-banjo great had Jake Shimabukuro not only open concerts, but also record with the Flecktones. Just as Fleck revolutionized the way musicians and fans heard the banjo, Shimabukuro -- in 2002, he was the first uke player from Hawaii to sign with Epic Records International -- takes his instrument out of the traditional Don Ho gentle-pluck realm and into an explosive multi-genre landscape. Rock/fusion aficionados will love the snappy intensity of Dragon's rumbling opening jam, "Shake It Up!," which pits his lightning quick, flamenco-flavored runs over crackling electric guitar and feisty programming. This frenetic track may prepare the listener for a chops-heavy project, but it's clear that Shimabukuro is equally interested in strong melodies and harmonies, and ...

$18.59 This quiet gem marks the directorial debut of Michael Kang, and was produced by Miguel Arteta (THE GOOD GIRL, CHUCK AND BUCK). Thirteen-year-old Ernest Chin (Jeffrey Chyau) is the first-generation son in a family of Chinese immigrants; he lives in a sleazy motel run by his hardworking, dour mother (Jade Wu) who discourages his interests in writing and girls. She believes that Ernest needs to appreciate what he has at home, and give up his dreams that threaten nothing but heartache--the viewer infers that this is what became of her own dreams. When a brash, hard-drinking, womanizing young Korean man named Sam (Sung Kang) moves into the motel, Ernest forms an unlikely bond with him, as each finds in the other something he desperately needs. Sam seeks out the fatherless boy, sensing a need for guidance and companionship that mirrors his own.
The simple, awkward dialogue of the film is managed winningly by novice actor Chyau, who was recruited from the Bronx High School of Science to play the part of Ernest. The performances by supporting actor Kang, as well as Samantha Futerman, who plays Ernest's precocious love interest, are equally powerful. With beautiful photography ...
