One of the more exciting jazz musicians to emerge in the first decade of the 21st century, Baltimore-based pianist Lafayette Gilchrist blends progressive 1960s post-bop experimentation with driving, accessible grooves. TOWARD THE SHINING PATH, Gilchrist's second album, builds on the strengths of his debut to deliver a thoroughly appealing post-modern jazz ride.
Whether exploring loose-limbed stride-funk fusions ("New Jack"), riff-driven jams ("Elephant Dance"), or lush, winding melodies ("Unsolved, Unresolved"), Gilchrist displays deft skill with a melodic line that is always surprising. Fans of contemporary pianists such as Jason Moran and Brad Mehldau would be well advised to check out this sophomore release from an up-and-coming talent.

JazzTimes (p.91) - "[T]he title track amounts to a swift knuckle-buster with Gilchrist tickling out zigzagging phrases against a pulverizing beat." Towards The Shining Path Music Lafayette Gilchrist Towards The Shining Path Songs Towards The Shining Path Review

| | Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra Love Supreme CD (2005)
Towards The Shining Path music CDs
$10.05 Few arrangers have attempted to score John Coltrane's landmark suite A Love Supreme for good reason: it is very difficult to stand up to the emotional impact of the composer's original recording. But Wynton Marsalis ambitiously dove into scoring it for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for this Palmetto CD. The results are rather uneven. In spite of the best efforts of the participating musicians, the solos often prove to be a distraction, leaning more toward humor than sticking to Coltrane's message. The most ridiculous section occurs in the opening movement, "Acknowledgement," when the baton is passed from one player to the next as they take turns playing the brief cadence of the well-known A Love Supreme vamp, which quickly grows ...
| | Grachan Moncur III Exploration CD (2004)
Towards The Shining Path songs
$12.89 Trombonist Grachan Moncur III, who was a member of the Jazztet in the early 1960s, gained his greatest fame for his two Blue Note albums (Evolution and Some Other Stuff) which were quite adventurous. He also worked with Archie Shepp, became involved in free jazz and spent much of the 1970s and '80s as a music educator. Dental problems resulted in Moncur only playing once in a great while in the 1990s. He had been in obscurity for quite awhile when he was contacted by arranger Mark Masters for the Exploration project. Fortunately Moncur's playing proved to still be in his prime. Masters wrote sympathetic charts for many of the trombonist's finest pieces, utilizing an all-star nonet that could really dig into the inside/outside music. "Excursion," a very coherent three-minute ...
| | Charlie Haden Not In Our Name CD (2005)
Towards The Shining Path album
$15.35 Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. Haden, of course, anchors these tunes (which include his own eclectic title track and a soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace") with his formidable--though never flashy--bass work, allowing ...

| | Charlie Parker Confirmation: Best Of The Verve Years CDs (1995)
Towards The Shining Path songs
$17.89 Recorded between 1947 and 1953. Includes liner notes by James Patrick.
This generous and carefully-documented compilation provides a wide overview of Parker's work from the late 40's and early 50's. It includes well-recorded material that previously appeared on the GENIUS OF CHARLIE PARKER LPs, tunes from concept albums like SOUTH OF THE BORDER (with Machito's orchestra) and CHARLIE PARKER WITH STRINGS (cooler than you'd expect, at times), and cuts from various JAZZ AT THE PHILHARMONIC releases on the Clef label. The main unifying element besides Parker's work is the touch of impressario Norman Granz, the man who created Jazz At The Philharmonic, and founded Clef records and the Verve label. Granz's faith in the idea of spontaneity--and thus the concept of the jam session as concert or recording event--was tempered by a desire to challenge Parker into going beyond the finite possibilities of the small bebop group. Parker wails with quartets and quintets on the GENIUS tunes, but we also hear him in orchestral settings (one of ...
