The Slim Shady LP announced not only Eminem's arrival, but it established that his producer Dr. Dre was anything but passé, thereby raising expectations for 2001, the long-anticipated sequel to The Chronic. It suggested that 2001 wouldn't simply be recycled Chronic, and, musically speaking, that's more or less true. He's pushed himself hard, finding new variations in the formula by adding ominous strings, soulful vocals, and reggae, resulting in fairly interesting recontextualizations. Padded out to 22 tracks, 2001 isn't as consistent or striking as Slim Shady, but the music is always brimming with character. If only the same could be said about the rappers! Why does a producer as original as Dre work with such ...
| | California Guitar Trio First Decade CD (2003)
Live At Room 5 June 13th 2005
$14.29 Live Recording
California Guitar Trio: Paul Richards, Bert Lams, Hideyo Moriya. Producers: California Guitar Trio, David Singleton. Personnel: Paul Richards (guitar, slide guitar, E-bow); Hideyo Moriya, Trey Gunn, Bert Lams (guitar); Roger Lambson Warr, Bill Janssen (saxophone). Audio Mixers: David Singleton; Paul Richards; Bert Lams. Audio Remasterers: David Singleton; Robert Fripp; Tony Arnold. Recording information: 329 Bronson, Los Angeles, CA (1991-1999); Boulder Theater, Boulder, CO (1991-1999); Gell-Mann Residence, Santa Fe, NM (1991-1999); Japan (1991-1999); King Crimson World Tour (1991-1999); Moriya Studio, Chiba-ken (1991-1999); Schloss Schwarzenberg, Scheinfield, Germany (1991-1999); Vine Street Sounds Stage, Murray, UT (1991-1999). Photographers: Thomas G. Smith; Paolo Aizza; Jake Clennell. Within a year from signing the California Guitar Trio, InsideOut Music released the First Decade compilation of tracks from their albums on Robert Fripp's Discipline Global Mobile label. During its early years, the CGT's identity was tripartite, each album and concert offering a mix of original compositions, rearranged classical tunes, and surf anthems, and The First Decade presents only the originals, running the track order of each album in sequence and picking up the tunes penned by Bert Lams, Paul Richards, and Hideyo Moriya. People who don't already own Yamanashi Blues, Invitation, Pathways, and Rocks the West can opt for this CD, but they'll miss such items as the fabulous arrangement of Bach's "Toccata" and a spirited rendition of the theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. However, The First Decade does highlight the group's ability to compose virtuosic tunes made of complex interlacing guitar parts. It provides a good listen, although with a lack ...
| | Alkaline Trio Crimson CD (2005) Enhanced CD
Live At Room 5 June 13th 2005
$11.79 The enhanced portion of this release contains "making of" video. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Alkaline Trio: Matt Skiba (vocals, guitar); Daniel Andriano (vocals, bass guitar); Derek Grant (vocals, drums). Crimson is the best next step for Alkaline Trio. It keeps Good Mourning's blacks and reds and crack melodic sense. But it's also much more accessible with its measured aggression, rich piano (courtesy of Jellyfish and studio veteran Roger Manning), and production from Jerry Finn, who's worked with blink-182 and the very-relevant-to-Alkaline Trio Jawbreaker. Like those groups Alkaline Trio has grown away from punk-pop; they've grown up. On 1998's Goddamnit!, Matt Skiba and Dan Andriano let out rowdy ...
