En Vivo album
$18.55 By 1996, guitar solo-heavy instrumental albums were looked down upon by the majority of rock fans -- as many had moved on to focusing on artists who put the importance of songwriting over shredding. However, you have to give Tony MacAlpine credit -- he didn't stray too far from his prior musical path on his solo release that year, Violent Machine. Featuring plenty of MacAlpine's six-string heroics, Violent Machine easily could have been released in 1989, and probably would have done battle with Flying in a Blue Dream in Guitar World magazine's year-end poll -- as evidenced by such selections as the album-opening title track, plus "Shoe Shine Cyber Boy" and "Mr. Destructive." But unlike many of the other similarly styled guitarists that MacAlpine has been compared to over the years, he is also a highly skilled pianist, and listeners get a glimpse of this on "Chopin Etude #12 Opus 10." And there are also a few other non-metal detours along the way, including the jazzy melodicism of "Sophisticated Domination," as well as the almost new age-ish "Carolina Blue." With Violent Machine, MacAlpine proved once and for all that he was sticking to his stylistic guns. ~ Greg Prato
Released in 1997, Violent Machine is the 10th recording by virtuoso guitarist/keyboardist Tony MacAlpine. ...
| | El Chicano 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection CD (2004) Remastered
En Vivo CD music
$6.79 As part of Universal's 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection, the 12-track Best of El Chicano disc highlights the group's best-known material released in the early to mid-'70s. While the group has often been compared to Santana, they were a much tighter outfit, bypassing extended jams and sticking closely to their combined roots of soul, salsa, and Latin jazz. Beyond their two genre-defining hit singles, "Brown-Eyed Girl" (1972) and "Tell Her She's Lovely" (1973), the collection ...
| | Ambrosia Road Island CD (1982)
En Vivo music CDs
$9.69 On their final album, Ambrosia forsakes the airbrushed AOR sounds that defined Life Beyond L.A. and One Eighty in favor of a strong, rock-oriented sound. They are aided in this aim by a gutsy production from James Guthrie (a producer better known for his work with groups like Judas Priest and Pink Floyd) that takes the group to a new level of sonic firepower. Songs like "For Openers" and "Still Not Satisfied" reverberate with a newfound sense of rock & roll muscle: The drums kick, the basslines throb, and the guitars and Hammond organ wail with abandon. Even Ambrosia's trademark ballads benefit from their newly beefed-up sound: "Feelin' Alive Again" features the airy harmonies and delicate keyboard shadings expected from this style of song, but it also gains an added sense of dramatic weight from Burleigh Drummond's thick drumming and piercing, emotional guitar solos from David Pack. The group also revives their early ...

| | Blind Faith - London Hyde Park 1969 DVD (1969) Widescreen
En Vivo CD music
$10.55 It was a great day for rock fans when, on June 7, 1969, the supergroup Blind Faith played their debut concert in London's Hyde Park, before an audience of 100,000 eager fans. The group consisted of Eric Clapton on guitar, vocalist and keyboardist Steve Winwood, bassist Rick Grech, and Ginger Baker on drums. The 40-minute set included "Well All Right," "Under my Thumb," and "Can't Find my Way Home."
Their debut gig was in front of a cool 100,000 people ...
| | Blink 182 Enema Of The State CD (1999) Enhanced CD
En Vivo music CDs
$10.39 Blink 182 embodies all the rock & roll verities, from savage, power chord-driven, guitar-bass-and-drums attack to a carefully cultivated tastelessness (see album title and cover art), bolstered by plenty of attitude (the abundance of tattoos doesn't hurt either). The band's post-Green Day pop-punk leaps out of the speakers with zero subtlety and maximum aggression. Guitars alternately blaze and chug over breakneck rhythms, while the vocal melodies pay homage to the time-honored pop hook tradition. Despite the band's four-on-the-floor approach, ...
| | Bla Pahinui Guava Soul CD (2002)
En Vivo songs
$13.59 It's wonderful to hear Bla Pahinui (or James Bla Pahinui, to offer his full name) return to what's really his signature piece, "Waimanalo Blues," this time around achingly poignant, the voice deeper and richer than ever before, like burled wood. One of the best all-round Hawaiian musicians, his guitar technique seems to become more minimal -- but more effective -- with each release, and it's especially noticeable on his wonderful versions of traditional songs like "Beauty Hula" and "No Ke Ano Ahiahi," both of which allow him freedom of the fretboard, which he uses sparingly but gorgeously, with his bluesy touches still intact -- always a way to recognize his playing. The production's low key, which is fine in this ...
| | Hank Snow Wanderin' On: The Best Of The Yodeling Ranger CD (2003) (Import) Germany
En Vivo album
$24.39 In the 1930s, Nova Scotia-born country singer Hank Snow donned flamboyant cowboy outfits and performed throughout Canada under the name "the Yodelling Ranger," taking his cue from Jimmie Rodgers, "the Singing Brakeman." This massive, five-disc Bear Family set presents the early recordings of Snow, who was short in stature but possessed a large commanding voice. While Snow wouldn't become famous in the States until the '50s, he had a long string of '30s and '40s singles in his native country, most ...
