(7 Customer Reviews)
The tireless Sizzla is not only one of the best dancehall artists in the industry, he is also one of the most prolific. Pumping out singles and full-length albums at an alarming rate, the roots-conscious Jamaican toaster produces an endless stream of bumping, rhythmically infectious dancehall for his fans to absorb.
AIN'T GONNA SEE US FALL is a collection of Sizzla's singles from 2005 and 2006 (only!), and while it is predictably uneven, the collection still boasts a number of fine tracks. Sizzla is at his raw, fiery best on songs like the unrelenting "Sad Mistake," while the set also shows his slick, pop side ("I'm With the Girls") and his devout Rasta side ("People Need Love"). All in all, this is a fine overview of one slice of Sizzla's output in the early 2000s and an interesting example of his insistent need to create.

| | Capleton Reign Of Fire CD (2004)
Ain't Gonna See Us Fall CD music
$11.39 Offering a satisfying set of righteous reggae that is more laid-back than usual, Capleton once again combines roots grooves with the computerized sounds of the time on Reign of Fire. Known as "the Prophet" on his island home of Jamaica, Capleton pulls the music back here, but his lyrics are still rebellious darts, mostly directed toward the powers that be and the irresponsible. Warning of the cleansing fire, Capleton calls out the oppressors on "That Day Will Come" and eagerly awaits the day "the wicked men will have nowhere to run." It's a powerful track, matched in intensity by ...

| | Sizzla Waterhouse Redemption CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Ain't Gonna See Us Fall album
$14.75 In Europe, Sizzla's Waterhouse Redemption hit the shelves a mere month after Ain't Gonna See Us Fall. The U.S. release stretched it to nearly three months, but either way, it plays right into the hands of the man's detractors, a growing group that point to his lack of quality control, his increasing love of bling, and his frequent dropping of the F-bomb, which doesn't seem to gel with his righteous Bobo Ashanti stance. They'll have a hard time picking apart this album since Waterhouse Redemption bounces between revolution numbers and lover's dancehall effortlessly, utilizing some classic riddims from King Jammy's studio along the way. Longtime reggae lovers should start with "Someone Loves You," an instantly infectious, swaggering tune that uses the classic "Sleng Teng" riddim. Sweeter still ...
| | Sizzla The Over Standing CD (2006)
Ain't Gonna See Us Fall CD music
$14.59 In many ways, The Overstanding is a traditional dancehall -- or at least a traditional Sizzla -- album. Bouncing between revolution ragga and sweet lovers rock and featuring a mix of new and old, this 2006 effort is a lot like the man's early full-lengths in shape and form, but it's on Damon Dash's new label and benefits from the extra money being thrown around. Recent Jamaican hits like "Solid as a Rock" and "Thank You Mama" get re-recordings that fatten the sound, while touches of polish from the hip-hop and R&B world broaden the spectrum, making The Overstanding an easy, yet not fully representative, entry into the world of Sizzla. The uplifting "Break Free" -- a completely different song from the "Break Free" found on 1999's Royal Son of Ethiopia -- is sure to put a smile on the face, while the opening "Take Myself Away" comes at the same issue from the other side as Sizzla looks for freedom in an unforgiving, bleak world. He's believable when writing about all the emotions between these two extremes and his ballads are all satisfying, although newcomers should be warned that the fragile falsetto voice he uses on his love songs is an acquired taste. What's fascinating ...
| | Mike Clark Conjunction CD (2001)
Ain't Gonna See Us Fall music CDs
$12.95 Something rare in jazz, Conjunction is billed to a rhythm section: drummer Mike Clark, bassist Paul Jackson, and vibraphonist Marc Wagnon, although the latter gets a leading role in this outfit, thanks to his great technique and his use of MIDI vibes to expand the soloing range of his instrument. This trio is completed by four guest musicians: guitarist extraordinaire David "Fuze" Fiuczynski, tenor sax Jed Levy, trombonist Josh Roseman, and reedist Chris Speed. This impressive lineup can be reduced to a quartet ("Horta-Culture") and go up to a sextet (on five tracks). If one takes out the post-bop ballad "Horta-Culture," the music on this CD lies somewhere between Pierre Moerlen's Gong and the Chick Corea Elektric Band, although funkier than any of them. "East West" and "Conjunction" provide ...

| | Sight + Sound: The 80'S CD (2006) With DVD
Ain't Gonna See Us Fall songs
$14.95 With the glut of '80s compilations on the market it's a wonder there's room for any more of these things. It seems that every imaginable angle has been explored (girl groups, new wave, British, American, Top 40, dance) and yet, they still come. Time/Life-EMI's Sight & Sound: the 80s manages to rise above the fray (if just a little bit) by doing a couple of things right. Trying to encapsulate a decade's worth of music on one CD is an impossible feat for any compilation to tackle but Sight & Sound does a better job than most. The song selections are predictable, but there's enough of a spread between, say, Blondie's "Call Me" and Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell" to make for a convincing (if short) overview ...
