(13 Customer Reviews)
A solid follow-up to 2005's SOLO ACOUSTIC VOLUME 1, this sequel was recorded at various concerts across several continents in the last few years, providing a wide overview of Jackson Browne's career as both a songwriter and a performer. Ranging across the breadth of Browne's lengthy career, from 1972's "Something Fine" to a handful of songs from 2002's THE NAKED RIDE HOME, SOLO ACOUSTIC VOLUME 2 is lighter on the instantly recognizable radio hits, although "Somebody's Baby" and "In the Shape of a Heart" are both accounted for. Even more appealing for longtime fans, over half of the 12 songs feature lengthy, at times rambling, but always entertaining introductions about the songs themselves or the circumstances of their writing.
Recorded live in front of an enthusiastic audience, 2005's SOLO ACOUSTIC VOL. 1 presents revered California singer/songwriter Jackson Browne performing many of the finest tunes from various eras of his career. Here Browne is on stage alone, accompanying himself on either acoustic guitar or keyboards, relating humorous tales about his music and life in between songs. This minimal setting allows Browne to get to the heart of these celebrated tunes, from early-1970s classics such as the achingly beautiful "These Days" and the thoughtful "For Everyman" to the later politically minded tracks "Lives in the Balance" and "Lookin' East."
Browne's clear, charismatic vocals shine in the spare context, and his alternately introspective and socially conscious narratives both benefit in this scenario. Listeners will be especially pleased to hear the closing track, "Take It Easy," which, of course, was a much bigger hit for the Eagles than for Browne himself. Some fans may bemoan the absence of "Running on Empty" and "Doctor My Eyes," but it's likely that the foreshadowed VOL. 2 will pick up on those and other missing Browne hits.

This is the next best thing to being there. I got the the feeling of being in someone's living room-that's a GOOD thing- the audience is obviously having a marvelous time. I was a Jackson Browne fan before I even knew who he was-waaaaaaaaay back in time, through Brewer and Shipley, who recorded and released "Rock Me on the Water" on Shake Off the Demon, the same year as Jackson released Saturate Before Using-1972. Unfortunately, this song, and some other favorites were left off of Vol.1, which only makes me yearn for Vol.2. The songs which ARE on Vol.1 are fantastic!!! Absolutely beautiful JB is a melancholy man, and this solo concert with him just playing guitar and piano to some of his best songs only brings out the ache in his soul. The few pieces of dialogue in the CD are amusing and establishes a sense of intimacy with the audience. This album was not very well advertised, and I was a little sceptical about buying it. But as it turns out, it's one of those albums where every song is a trasure and an album I can listen to over and over. Submitted by krazykows (Philadelphia, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Songs from the heart Without electric amplification & a large backing band, this album portrays a performer with heart & soul. It has memerised me. Bring on Vol.2 Mr. Browne Submitted by shigra (Richmond Hill, NSW , Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Mostly for the fans I guess? Still it's pretty good. This collection of live solo songs by Jackson Browne, accompanied by himself on guitar or piano, is pretty satisfying. The best renderings are The Barricades Of Heaven, These Days, Your Bright Baby Blues and Too Many Angels, but quite a few of the other songs are well worth listening to. I would recommend this CD to fans and neophytes alike. Submitted by hanssd (Stord, Norway) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
An Absolute Must for All JB Fans What a wonderful piece of work. I'm happy to see the designation "Volume I," as that leads one to believe there will be more. And there should be. This leaves the listener wanting more.
Jackson Browne in raw, unprocessed, pure acoustical form. The playing is solid...nothing more than the songs require. The singing is pure Jackson Browne. And the lyrics? Truly one of the greatest poets of modern times.
Throw in a little sense of humor in the between-songs banter with the audience, and you've got a very tasty treat. Submitted by mealer (Central California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
