They may or may not steal yer heart, but on their fourth album, the Briefs do continue to sound as if they might have stolen your uncle's record collection. They make no bones about their influences: within any randomly selected two-minute snippet you'll hear the Buzzcocks, the Undertones, the Adverts, maybe even some Stiff Little Fingers. The fake British accents (these guys are from Seattle) can be taken as a matter of course, and so can the period-appropriate 28-minute album length (though it would be easier to accept if it came with a period-appropriate album price: if memory serves, an Undertones LP went for about $7.29 new). But all caveats and qualifications notwithstanding, there's no denying the genuine trashy pleasures to be found on this album, in particular the Ramones-go-Oi! thrasher "My Girl (Wants to Be a Zombie)," the slightly icky cougar-hunting anthem "Forty and Above," and the spastically brilliant "Criminal Youth." The Briefs are intent on re-creating the shout-along choruses of earlier British punk bands like the Damned and the Sex Pistols, but with far more hooks in the vein of a tamer Dropkick Murphys. The quartet is very tight, having perfected the two-minute three-chord gems that sound like a band on the cusp of something grand. "Halfsize Girl" is a tad more angst-ridden, although the sneers and snarls are still audible. Another mini-rant, "Destroy the USA," is a brief rave-up backed by a ragged garage band sound. The group should never tone things down, as the paltry and radio-friendly approach to "Ephedrine Blue" falls flat quickly. "So Stupid" walks the line between the last track and the earlier efforts with better than expected results -- a suffocating rhythm section as the listener is given a toe-tapping, fist-pumping foundation. The Album Leaf is the brainchild of Jimmy LaValle, whose music is a curious mixture of moody keyboard and guitar motifs and stark electronic effects. This combination yields an atmospheric patois that is both exotic and strangely familiar.
A collection of brooding instrumental works, SEAL BEACH represents an introspective journey for LaValle. The opening track, "Malmo," blends swirling record-player needle noise with a mechanistic backbeat and a repeating keyboard riff (played on a Fender Rhodes). The less melancholic title track also prominently features the Rhodes. This time, LaValle's use of bell tones makes the Rhodes sound more like a celesta, drenched in vibrato.
