Every holiday season the standards are performed many times and many ways. From smooth jazz instrumentals to fervent gospel proclamations, all the way through to Taste of Christmas and its collection of post-hardcore, emo, and alt-metal groups reworking some of Christmastime's best-known gems and writing a few holiday-themed tracks themselves. Skindred covers "Jingle Bells," and My American Heart turns "First Noel" into Hoobastank's "Reason," but as the originals go they're probably for fans only. The Used sound exactly like the Used on "Alone This Holiday" -- there's a holiday theme to the lyrics, but it's just rote emo balladry. Plain White T's offer the marginally better pop-punk of "Season of a Lifetime," but the Black Halos' "Homeless for Christmas" sounds like someone got a Write Songs Like the Strokes handbook last Christmas, and the fiery industrialized alt-metal of "Christmas Evel" from Opiate for the Masses seems to just miss the point. ~ Johnny Loftus
Performers include: The Used, Skindred, Emery Street Drum Corps, Funeral For A Friend, From First To Last, My American Heart, Versus The World, Opiate For The Masses, Bed Light For Blue Eyes, Roses Are Red, The Smashup, Bleed The Dream, Amped, Horse The Band, Like Yesterday, Black Halos, Gatsby's American Dream. Taste Of Christmas Music Review Average Rating: (3.4 out of 5 stars) Only for those who HATE Christmas. Almost all the songs are about bad things that surround Christmas time. Songs that talk about bad or broken relationships...during Christmas, death...around Christmas, even one about Herod's slaying of the children. This is garanteed to NOT put you in the Christ mood.
Some of the music is enjoyable, the message kills it. The first track has an annoying high pitched noise to it that made it impossible to tolerate. Submitted by ewallers (Modesto, Ca, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

| | Tony Furtado Bare Bones CD (2005)
Taste Of Christmas
$11.49 Tony Furtado Bare Bones Release date: March 22, 2005 String-bender extraordinaire Tony Furtado is a road dog. Playing an average of 300 live dates a year, from the western ski resorts in the winter to the summer festivals throughout the Midwest, through gritty Chicago and glitzy New York, to New England seaside towns and up and down the West Coast, Furtado's passion is playing his music live and bringing it out there to the people. Accordingly, he's wooed music lovers and won fans all over kingdom come. Which brings us to BARE BONES - a sampling of live solo acoustic shows that Tony recorded himself during some gigs last summer. His extensive solo touring had left folks wanting more of the same, and Furtado fans both new and old started asking for a recording that captures what he does best - play his heart out on stages in small clubs, at large festivals and just about everyplace in between. BARE BONES is all Furtado. The songs here are not only performed (and most of them written) by Tony, but also recorded on the spot and engineered by the guitarist/singer/songwriter as well. And talk about baptism by fire: Furtado learned how to use the recording gear at these very shows. Dusty Wakeman, an accomplished musician and studio guru in his own right (Lucinda Williams, Dwight Yoakam, Anne McCue), did the mixing and editing at his Mad Dog Studios in LA. Dusty has worked with Tony before, producing his records and playing in his road band, and here again he captures the flavor and flow of Tony's live show, letting the performances shine through ...
