It's impossible to mention British rocker and ex-Libertine Pete Doherty without also referring to his highly publicized drug addiction, the haze of which hangs heavy over his band Babyshambles' 2006 debut. Ex-Clash member and punk-rock elder statesman Mick Jones produces with a light touch that's occasionally reminiscent of the Clash's SANDINISTA! album, despite the fact that Doherty and his mates can't quite seem to muster up the same energy as their forefathers. Still, there are more than enough rough gems on DOWN IN ALBION to make the listener want to root for Doherty. "F**k Forever" carries hints of vintage Ray Davies, and "The 32nd of December" is a great pop song in embryo, while the pretty, fragile "What Katy Did Next" laments Doherty's scandal-beset relationship with the fashion model Kate Moss (who contributes backing vocals on "La Belle et La Bete"). Though it's definitely a shambolic affair, DOWN IN ALBION has enough truly splendid moments that it deserves to be heard apart from Doherty's shenanigans.
Japanese pressing of their debut album includes three bonus tracks, 'Flophouse', 'What Katy Did (Demo)' and the enhanced video to F***Forever (Clean Version Of "Fuck Forever"). The album was produced by Mick Jones and mixed by Mick Jones and Bill Price. The album contains the single 'Fuck Forever', a new recording of their first Top Ten single 'Killamangiro' and other songs including 'Albion', 'Pipedown', 'Loyalty Song', 'What Katy Did Next', '32nd Of December' and 'Up The Morning'. A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. The album kicks off with the glorious "14 Shades of Green," a chimey gem that takes a nostalgic look at a hometown. Michael Paulo's ingenious "Millennium Swing" on the saxman's Midnight Passion would have been the perfect party music to ring in Y2K with. Using the dramatic backdrop of the Johann Strauss theme made famous by the movie 2001 as a launching pad, Paulo weaves retro-soul and blues/funk keyboard flavors (alternating synth-created B-3 and Rhodes sounds) and wah-wah guitar clicks with brass flourishes and a playful call and response between his honking soprano and Michael "Patches" Stewart's trumpet.
Then it's disco all the way with "YT," which combines a punchy drum machine, soaring tenor melody, and a synth string line that approximates the vibe of the Soul Train theme. Most of the other tunes are more typical of Paulo's previous catalog, a mix of easy funk grooves and dreamy, smoldering ballads that the album title -- which recalls that of his first album, 1989's One Passion -- would seem to promise. In looking towards the millennium, he seems to be surveying elements of the past three decades. Kimo Cornwell's Rhodes brings a '70s Crusaders flavor to several tunes, while "Struttin' With Mama Mae" combines '90s hip-hop energy with occasional bursts of the type of synth accents that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis used with Janet Jackson in the '80s. ~ Jonathan Widran
