Personnel: Will Downing (vocals); Chuck Loeb, Dwight Sills, Wah Wah Watson, Eric D. Jackson, Phil Hamilton, Rohn Laurence (guitar); Rex Rideout, Chris "Big Dog" Davis, Herman "Peanut" Johnson (keyboards); Melvin Davis, Ronnie Garrett, Sekou Bunch, Mark Walker, Dwayne "Smitty" Smith (bass instrument); Bashiri Johnson (percussion); John Stoddart, Audrey Wheeler Downing, Keith Fluitt, Dwight Thompson (background vocals). Two years after Emotions and three after his exceptional Sensual Journey, singer/songwriter and producer Will Downing returns with Soul Symphony. There is something utterly timeless about Downing's approach. His new soul m.o. brings his mellifluous baritone to the listener in a silky smooth yet beat-driven tunnel of emotive reflection that goes right to the heart. Once more, Downing surrounds himself with the cream of the studio crop, like guitarist Wah Wah Watson, Rex Rideout on keyboards, and bassist Melvin Davis, just to mention a few. Downing wrote only about half the album this time out, and on these tracks he collaborated with bandmembers who wrote the majority of the rest. The album's beautiful hinge is the cover of Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell's "Superstar." But the slippery syncopation of "Crazy Love" and the shimmering acoustic guitar and hand drums that drive "Heart of Mine" are stellar as well. There isn't anything radically new here, but why should there be when Downing has reached as close to perfecting his sound as he's going to get? ~ Thom Jurek Will Downing makes most purveyors of smoothed-out, romantic R&B sound like Mortimer Snerd. Lush, sensual, and sparkling (one can almost hear the champagne chilling in the background), Downing's music follows the m.o. of Al Green, Barry White, and Marvin Gaye. SOUL SYMPHONY, Downing's 10th release, shows off the singer-songwriter-producer's well-brewed blend of soul, jazz, pop, and easy listening balladry--not to mention his knee-weakening baritone--to classic effect. Looking for the perfect soundtrack to a candlelit dinner and a cozy bubble bath for two? Look no further. You'll Love It! I have never been disappointed by Will. Once again, Will touches your body and soul with his smooth and sensual voice. You'll definitely "make time for love", with this one. Submitted by LuShae (Bakersfield, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Could do better I wasnot that impressed with this album, I think that it is missing that deep sensual beat that Will is often known for. It is not bad, just not what I expect from this artist. I saw him in Chicago last year and the show was fabulous. Would love to hear a live version of his music. Submitted by godsdancer402 (Chicago,IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
He Does It Again... Is there anyone in the music business more consistent than Will Downing right now? I seriously doubt it. Here he is again with another achingly smooth recording. The whole CD is worthy (as usual with Will), but the standouts are: “Put Me On”, “What’s It Gonna Be”, “A Promise”, and “Make Time for Love”. Those 4 songs vividly display what Will Downing is all about…smoothness, quality of vocals and a truly timeless sound that is generally lacking today. Also listen for “Soul Steppin” and “Superstar”. Superstar being his tribute to the late Luther Vandross. Luther would be proud to hear how well Will did one of his signature tunes. For a CD to do so much with only 9 songs defines the phrase “quality over quantity”. Will Downing fans here is yet another one to add to your collection!
