| | Allman Brothers Band Gold CD Allman Brothers Band Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
At first glance, the two-disc GOLD collection may seem surprisingly similar to 2004's STAND BACK, with both chronologically arranged sets featuring many of the same Allman Brothers classics. Where GOLD differs from its predecessor, however, is in its focus; while STAND BACK draws from the years 1969 to 2002, GOLD hones in on the blues-rock group's '69-'79 heyday. Over that 10-year period, the band's surprisingly eclectic aesthetic would flow between the complex, jazz-tinged grooves of "Don't Want You No More" and the southern-soul vibe of "Midnight Rider." Although every record from this era garners at least one track, the first four Allman Brothers Band albums, including AT THE FILLMORE EAST, deservedly, get the majority of the running time. Fans looking for a focused, yet extensive compilation of the band at their peak can't go wrong with GOLD.
The Allman Brothers Band: Dickey Betts (vocals, guitar); Gregg Allman (vocals, organ); Dan Toler, Duane Allman (guitar); David Goldflies, Lamar Williams, Berry Oakley (bass guitar); Jai Johanny Johanson, Butch Trucks (drums).
Personnel: Chuck Leavell (piano).

Gold album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. Otis' first act as a recording bandleader was to borrow Jimmy Rushing from Count Basie! ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Gold CD music
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant ...

| | Chris De Burgh High On Emotion: Live From Dublin CD (1995) Germany
Gold CD music
$10.59 Believe it or not, Chris de Burgh performs extremely well live, carrying out his ballads and story-songs with genuine passion and enthusiasm. With High on Emotion, de Burgh plays to a crowd to which he has close ties, since he attended Trinity College in Dublin after moving there from Argentina. This sets the stage for a very entertaining album, as he covers a favorable blend of love songs and musical tales, pulling some of his better material from out of the past. de Burgh sings such classics as "A Spaceman Came Travelling," "Don't Pay the Ferryman," and "Patricia the Stripper" with a collected vigor played out in his trademarked classy style. "Spanish ...
| | Let It Be CD (1970) (Import) Japan; Reissue
Gold music CDs
$41.75 LET IT BE...NAKED contains a FLY ON THE WALL bonus disc including song rehearsals and conversation snatches.
Includes liner notes by Kevin Howlett and interview excerpts with The Beatles
In its original form, LET IT BE signaled the end of an era, closing the book on the Beatles, as well as literally and figuratively marking the end of the '60s. The 1970 release evolved from friction-filled sessions the Beatles intended to be an organic, bare-bones return to their roots. Instead, the endless hours of tapes were eventually handed over to Phil Spector, since neither the quickly splintering Beatles nor their longtime producer George Martin wanted to sift through the voluminous results.
LET IT BE... NAKED sets the record straight, revisiting the contentious sessions, stripping away the Spectorian orchestrations, reworking the running order, and losing all extemporaneous in-studio banter. On this version of the album, filler tracks ("Dig It," "Maggie Mae") are dropped, while juicy b-side "Don't Let Me Down" is added. The most obvious revamping is on the songs handled heavily by Spector. Removing the orchestrations from "The Long and Winding Road" and "Across the Universe" gives Paul McCartney's vocals considerably more resonance on the former, doing the same for John Lennon's voice and guitar on the latter. This alternate take on LET IT BE enhances the album's power, reclaiming the raw, unadorned quality that was meant to be its calling card from the beginning.
Generally regarded as the Beatles' last album, LET IT BE was actually recorded in 1969, before the recording and release of ABBEY ROAD. LET IT BE was greeted with mixed reviews when it came out in 1970, and is still a controversial disc in the band's catalogue--many fans reject it, while others defend it fiercely. Notable for its difference from anything else the Beatles recorded, LET IT BE has a raw, ragged, muscular sound that recalls the band's very earliest rock roots. The songs were mostly recorded live (save Phil Spector's overdubs on "The Long and Winding Road," "Across the Universe," and "I Me Mine"), and the result is a world away from the meticulous, high-sheen sophistication of the group's ...
| | G B H Leather Bristles Studs CD (1981) (Import) Canada
Gold songs
$17.39 British punk band G.B.H. aggressively perform 15 raw tracks on this rollicking album, which features "Knife Edge" and "Generals."
Leather, Bristles, No Survivors and Sick Boys... is a compilation of several early G.B.H. singles and EP releases. As such, it has a bit of a hodgepodge quality, though the uniform crude production and rudimentary music and lyrics all make the individual tracks blend together somewhat. Compared to the slicker, sometimes more bloated production and music of later G.B.H. albums, Leather, Bristles sometimes sounds refreshingly rough and energetic. "Generals" and "No Survivors" are both scathing anti-war tirades, and "Dead on Arrival" is a despairing anti-drug song. There's even a hint of musical complexity in "Sick Boy," a Clockwork Orange-like depiction of juvenile delinquency. Unfortunately, for every promising moment, there's also the silly "Lycanthropy" and "Necrophilia," and the even more juvenile "Big Women," an ode to big women ...
