Alan Abrahams' (aka Portable) second full-length album is simultaneously archaic and totally futuristic, avidly exploring the fringes of Techno and House. His is a truly unfettered afrofuturistic variant of Techno that elegantly and serenely circumnavigates any prevalent beats, sub-scenes and trends. Version is also deep, soft, round and organic. Version album
$9.59 The Four Horsemen were quite literally a shattered band come 1996. Five years on from their simplistic but infectious retro-rock debut, they'd been dropped by Def American, been abandoned by their main songwriter guiding force in founding guitarist Haggis, and, most heartbreaking of all, lost drummer Ken "Dimwit" Montgomery to a drug overdose. As the band's last remaining original members, it came down to guitarist Dave Lizmi and troubled singer Frank C. Starr (more on him later) to assemble a new lineup and attempt to shoulder the load themselves on the snidely named Gettin' Pretty Good at Barely Gettin' By. And they did an OK job. The album still featured much of the Four Horsemen's stripped-down, hard-rocking style, but standout cuts such as "Hot Rod" and the poignant "Song for Absent Friends" generally lacked the Southern Skynyrd flavor, and especially the power boogie AC/DC crunch of old. Instead, the album mostly resorted to a mellower, ...

| | Paul Van Dyk Politics Of Dancing, Vol. 2 CDs (2005)
Version music CDs
$12.55 It differs little from his previous releases, but Paul Van Dyk's The Politics of Dancing, Vol. 2 is a satisfying argument that trance isn't dead and not even on life support. One bit of newness is the speed at which Van Dyk discards tracks on disc one's mix, a 17-song epic journey into uplifting, atmospheric dancefloor dreaminess. Theatrical stops and starts feature into every one of these blissful numbers, but Van Dyk keeps things moving at a pace such that the listener probably won't notice the gimmicky device is being overused. Otherwise, everything is tasteful with vocal numbers that don't get too precious and just enough Benny Benassi-styled electro to let you know this is 2005 and not 2000. Wayne Jackson's earthy vocals make Van Dyk's own "The Other Side" the album's song to remember while opening the more ...

Version CD music
$6.49 While only serious film buffs are likely to recall Hugh Hudson's role as the director of the Oscar-winning CHARIOTS OF FIRE, the Greek composer Vangelis became, and remained, a household name with his soundtrack for the 1981 film. At the time, the theme song was parodied as being excessively saccharin.
Indeed, with titles such as "Five Rings" and "100 Metres," the album wears its Olympian heart on its sleeve. Nonetheless, CHARIOTS OF FIRE is often a brooding work, and if the prevailing memory of this album is one of slow-motion runners and heady triumph, Vangelis's synthesizer work often conveys a sense of isolation and lost glory.
Vangelis is one of the most famed composers of film music, and with 1492 he adds another superior soundtrack to a discography that includes such classics as CHARIOTS OF FIRE and BLADE RUNNER. The soundtrack to a film that recounts Christopher Columbus's journey and discovery of America, 1492 has all the grandeur and scope one would associate with the film's topic. As per usual, Vangelis employs ...
