Mail From Hell album
$9.58 The second Glee soundtrack throws a bone to the show's supporting characters, with Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) singing her first solo and Amber Riley (Mercedes) receiving a larger chunk of airtime. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, though; Morrison delivers one of the album's most inventive ...

| | Gov't Mule By A Thread CD (2009)
Mail From Hell music CDs
$11.89 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here ...

| | ABC Beauty Stab CD (1983) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Mail From Hell music CDs
$8.79 The difference between Beauty Stab's chart statistics in the U.K. and in the U.S. is extremely contrasting. The album's only single, "That Was Then and This Is Now," reached number 18 in the U.K., while it stalled at number 89 in the United States. The album itself climbed to number 12 on ABC's side of the ocean, while it stalled at number 69 on the American charts. The reason that Beauty Stab made such a substantial impact in the U.K. was due mainly to the album's makeshift concept about the band's take on modern England, with Martin Fry and Mark White trying to push their opinions through the buzz of guitars rather than the shiny pop sparkle of synthesizers and drum machines. Every aspect that made Lexicon of Love a masterpiece is absent on Beauty Stab. Gone is the brilliant songwriting which involved Fry's clever wordplay and acute wit, the pre-fabricated hooks that are so addictive, and, above all, the squeaky-clean sound from both a production standpoint and an instrumental one is nowhere to be found. ABC tried to implement a slightly hardened sound into their music, but the result came out thin and undistinguished. The single was the only redeeming ...
| | King Rock 'N' Roll CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Mail From Hell songs
$16.99 Although King was one of the most important independent record labels of the 1940s-1960s, they were far more adept at R&B, blues, soul, and (prior to rock 'n' roll) country, than they were at straightforward rock 'n' roll. Like so many indies steeped in the roots of R&B and hillbilly, though, they tried their hand at rockabilly and all-out rock 'n' roll, at times connecting with the early or fading careers of big names. This compilation has a couple dozen sides from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s (though most are the mid-'50s to the early '60s), none of them are particularly exceptional, though most of the performers are trying pretty hard. The main shortfall lies in the generic nature of much of the material; some of these sound like over-the-hill country swing vets doing rockabilly, or quasi-rockabilly, under duress, and some of the others are so formulaic that they verge on unwitting self-parody. Some of the better cuts are those that don't take themselves too seriously, perhaps because some of these are by country singers who probably didn't take rock'n'roll itself too seriously. In that category would fall Chick & His Hot Rods' "Just Doing Rock 'n' Roll," which is actually bluegrass duo Don Reno and Red Smiley under a pseudonym, and Bob Temple's "Vim Vam Vamoose," one of early rockabilly's infinitely silly play on words. Most of these guys were commercial nobodies, but you'll probably recognize a few of these names, most notably Trini Lopez (with his mild 1959 rockabilly single "Rock On"); Bruce Channel (with his crudely recorded, pre-"Hey! Baby" 1960 single ...

$9.95 This generous 17-song set is culled from live performances from all over the world: Athens, Berlin, Jerusalem and Munich, to name a few. Despite a few intense electric moments ("Locomotive Breath," "A New Day Yesterday") this is very much in the "unplugged" tradition, meaning many of the formerly electric rock numbers are recast in gentler settings, featuring spare, acoustic ...
