Starting off with one of the hardest, fastest, ecstatic bursts of rock they've ever recorded ("Spirits"), Spaceman is a resounding assertion that this band's career is far from over. In fact, this record wipes the floor with nearly every note issued by the endless succession of post-Nirvana, MTV-approved alternative rock bands. Like the Ramones (and perhaps Motorhead), the Rifles seem to get better with age, and for all of us punks way past 30, that's life-affirming news. ~ John Dougan
A blazing return to form: curiously, the band sounds far more settled and relaxed within themselves on this new studio outing than was the case on Heaven on a Stick. Credit is due to the excellent production by Paul Tagg and Phil Punch, who sand away some of the slickness of Blind Ear and the occasional fussiness of Heaven on a Stick without any loss of power; mostly, they just manage to increase the voltage. Whatever the reason, the band sound like they're all pulling in the same direction again and, next to Blind Ear, this is the Rifles' best-sounding record. Hot Records. 2005. Spaceman In A Satin Suit album
$13.75 A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. The album kicks off with the glorious "14 Shades ...

$15.89 MARK MURPHEYTHAT'S WHO I AM__Mark Murphey's latest release, That's Who I Am, features nine original songs and three cover songs. Mark's career as a singer-songwriter spans the past two decades with most of that time spent with The Class Band. Mark writes, sings, auctioneers, flips burgers, is a good mechanic, and re-builds John Deere tractors. The That's Who I Am project was recorded over a seventeen year period with two common elements - Mark Murphey and Lloyd Maines. It features some of the best Texas musicians and is summed up in a line from Amarillo Highway - "I don't wear a Stetson but I'm willing to bet son that I'm big a Texan as you are." California Wine was first released in the eighties and charted on Bill Board. It remains a timely tune destined to becoming a classic. Low and Lonely and Oklahoma Pride are also Mark Murphey originals. Mark co-wrote, Down in Mexico, The Devil Took Your Mind, Georgia on His Mind, Winter Night, That's Who I Am, and Mary Go Round. Also on the album, Mark does a great job with Terry Allen's Amarillo Highway, Michael Nesmith's I Just Began to Care and the old Johnny Horton "mover" On A Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor. He's been writing and playing his songs for the past twenty years and is just now getting around to showcasing his talent. Mark is the man described on track one of this album, 'a hard working man - that'll help you if he can.' He's a great writer with a very smooth and honest country voice."
